Winter racing in Britain

We have the Plum Pudding at Mallory on Boxing Day, but what else is there? I could have sworn not so long ago that MSVR organised allcomers races at Snetterton for November/December time, as of course we've had Ginetta/F4 Winter series as well as FPA, Mini Se7ens and others.

What is a circuit race fan to do this time of year to get their fix?

Can't remember any circuit racing at Brands or Snetterton in December in recent history, but until a couple of years ago Brands used to run the 'into the night' stuff for Britcar up to mid-November (usually the 2nd Saturday of the month).

Get out and see other forms of motorsport, you know about Donington, the VSCC have Driving Tests at Bicester and there are sporting trials all across the country before racing starts again.

I miss the days when MSV would put on an FRenault and Ginetta Junior Winter series for racers to get experience on circuit before the driver turn old enough before the full season. I recall a very young Sennan Fielding and Billy Monger obliterating their fields at a grey drizzly Snetterton right before exploding into their respective championships the following year.

I guess the appeal in funing in a warmer country around Christmas time took over.

There's still loads of karting. PFI has a Winter Series, Whilton Mill starts up in January having only missed December. Down south Clay Pigeon and Llandow both have racing scheduled.

Lots of short, sharp action. Big grids. Close racing. Stars of the future. Probably a fight between Cadet dads and/or mums. What's not to like?

Oh and spectator entry is normally free. Many events are shown on YouTube, too.

looking a cicuit calendars in general theres very little trackday activity booked for winter now either. Seems like they lose money by opening up in the colder months now.

Believe it or not we used to have rallycross wintrerseries north and south!

And autograss also had a sort of winterseries, but the change in weather has rather put paid to all of this, I do recall seeing rallycross at Lydden in full snow though, the track was just about clear but the loose surface was not and snow banks were the barriers!

Palmer has seen a money spinner in the MSV rally series, so much so it has become rather expensive to watch at, just dont go on the grass, he will put barriers etc up to damage your car if you do. In some places!!

That is possibly because Silverstone, in particular, do not allow spectators in to many of the grandstands at smaller meetings. Even at the Grand Prix meeting a few years ago, the security personnel would not permit us to go in to one of the virtually empty stands on the Saturday afternoon after the F1 qualifying had finished - there were only about a dozen people in it - despite the fact that we had 3 day tickets which permitted us to use the stands on the Friday.

the average Cadwell/Donny/Snett club car event gets around 100-150 paying tickets through the geae and probably the same again as comp'ed tickets from competitors, race drivers get their ticket plus 3 complimentary for team/family.

Brands Super Touring Power and the other MSV combined show/race meetings get 1000+ over the 2/3 days. The Modified Live/Time Attack crowds are similarly huge too. considering its club level motorsport on track, I expect the UK racing scene go down that hybrid ontrack/offtrack theme in future.

If this was the BRSCC TCR meeting, I was there on Sunday and the only grandstand open was on the infield at Vale/Club Chicane with a few people in it. There were quite a lot more people spectating from the viewing areas on the Wing bulding and a couple of us hardy types on the outfield as it was bloody cold! This meeting was probably the third level in the car racing ladder (behind BTCC & British GTs - trucks probably have a spectator level between these two) and had very little - if any - publicity. The International Circuit is not one of the best spectating tracks in my view.

I did pop up to the National Circuit where the HSCC finals were being held and, unless everyone was in the BARC grandstand at Brooklands, seemed to be almost completely empty. At least there was one toilet block open there unlike on the outfield at the other end where all 3 were locked!

I've attended many HSCC finals meetings at Silverstone over the last 25/30 years and the only grandstand I recall being open is the BRDC (not BARC, I think) stand at Brooklands. This does give a good view from the hump in the Wellington straight round to the entry to Woodcote. So perhaps 25% of the circuit length but maybe 33% of a lap time. I think maybe only the stand on the outside of the entry to Woodcote would give a better view.

That's the one - brain fart over initials. The one on the outside of Woodcote is occasionally open at club meetings, but I prefer to stand on the terracing at the exit of Luffield which gives a similar view.
I'll be there for the Walter Hayes Trophy in a couple of weeks.
