What have you done Gian Carlo?
Former grand prix team owner Gian Carlo Minardi has today admitted that he is under investigation with regard to financial dealings made in his past.
In a statement designed to pre-empt mass media speculation into the affair, the charismatic Minardi confirmed that certain past financial activities are currently the subject of investigation by the Italian fiscal authorities. The investigation covers the period between 1993 and 1996, when he was the team principal of the Faenza-based Formula One operation that still bears his name.
Minardi has categorically denied all charges of financial wrong-doing, and has pledged to co-operate fully with the investigation.
He also stresses that the investigation in no way relates to the current management of the Minardi team, which was bought over the winter by Australian businessman Paul Stoddart. The 'new' European Minardi team, as the operation is now structured, will not be affected by the investigation in any way.
"We regret very much the circumstances in which our accountant Stefano Sangiorgio finds himself, and hope that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible," Minardi said, " We are confident, and trust fully in the authorities to do their work speedily."
