Vodafone puts the squeeze on costs

10 bil pounds knocked off the value of Vodafone over night on UK markets, looking to put the squeeze on costs at the same time committing to a billion pound share buyback.

Some suggestions the McLaren sponsorship is in the gun ... how secure is 888 deal?

interesting that they were saying in the F1 coverage that vodafone was being pursued by ferrari for sponsorship. Inferring that Mclaren would probably lose it on that basis.

I think 888's total budget would equate to the costs of portable toilets in F1. Wouldn't think that team has much to worry about as they are one of the main sponsorhip avenues in this country.

When was that Ned, the news was only released to the markets this week ... are you suggesting F1 announcers would know when the Stock Exchanges dont?

I wasnt referring to the stock exchange. I was referring to the F1 coverage from Germany takling about the vodafone sponsorship moving from one team to another.

The commentators made a note of the vodafone signeage being on the ferraris next year. They said it was a possibility, and from memory they got to that topic of conversation after talking about Fernando Alonso moving somewhere in 2009. They linked him with the vodafone sponsorship with his time at Mclaren, then pondered about Mclaren losing the vodafone sponsorship.

It is silly season as they say, so maybe it was their way of generating interest etc. Maybe now that the stock exchange stuff has emerged, that line of thought might change. Sponsorship in F1 costs a pretty penny, and sponsoring ferrari probably demands the most amount of funds in F1.

Would be an interesting switch, considering McLaren took the Vodafone backing away from Ferrari originally back at the start of 2007

Ok, but how does Vodafone moving from McLaren to Scuderia Ferrari relate to Triple Eight Racing?

The original posts makes mention of the McLaren/Vodafone deal, so it is all relevant to the thread (and even if it wasn't, surely we're not about to get all "v8c" about our threads are we?)

Yes we are! If you're talking 888, then fine, but if the discussion is Ferrari/McLaren then we'll move it to the F1 forum. There are other areas on this website, you know...

Vodafone Australia

My original post was the Australian context not F1 & the major motorsport sponsorship is 888.
To add to the story is the appointment of a Vodafone exec to the V8SC admin.

Interesting claim by Vodafone HO ' no changes to sponsorship, no job losses'. Make for interesting cost reductions.

Ummmmm, I was fairly coherent during the F1 Broadcast (Read - Sober, for once!) and all I heard was the Santander sponsorship.

They are the Spanish bank that came to McLaren when they had Alonso. They have been confirmed to be on the move - sure you haven't mixed the two up?

Back on track - I guess the question is the same as the GM/Holden support one - how healthy is the Vodafone Australian arm compared to the international?

when the company commits to a billion pound share buy back, they will raid piggy banks wherever, Australia included.

Vodafone would be mad to leave Leiws Hamilton. Easily the most marketable product in F1.

With Ford not paying for Lowndes at the end of this contract, it will leave a big hole in T888s budget - is Whincup on the factory payroll? Is 2009 the last year of Lowndes Ford contract?

peckstar has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Whincup is not on a ford contract

2009 will be the last year of lowndes contract

V8SA are putting in place a no manufacturer driver sponsorship clause. you will not be able to use drivers who are sponsored by a manufacturer

Interesting merger of 3 & Vodafone Here..

Both brands remain intact... in a new JV vehicle...

So.. did Mr Dane's team help secure the DJR '3' sponsorship?

Would it be such a bad thing if 888 had a reduction in funding? They are so far ahead, and would remain so for a while, before gradually falling back to the field with less development dollars... really it would add extra interest to the series if they had a new sponsorship deal less laden with $.

The Brisbane Lions have lost [ie not resigned] their Vodafone sponsorship from the end of this season...reportedly worth $2million/year.
