Mike Smith

Sad news that Mike Smith died on Friday from complications from heart surgery aged 59.

Aside from his TV and radio career, many of us remember him from the RS500 touring car days alongside Robb Gravett and his exploits in the Willhire 24 hours.

RIP

I judge him on some of the things he did away from the track like connecting with other ten tenthers on here or looking after Will Hoy's correspondence when the ex champion was suffering from cancer. Not for anything on the track. Although the way he round up Sytner, hilarious!

billy bleach should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
A good mate of mine was his Team Manger at Prodrive and Trakstar. He reckoned that on his day he was as quick as most but always had the celebrity tag following him around. He said Mike had the best fun at a track he saw when he went to a DTM race in Hockenhiem and nobody knew him and he could queue up for hot dogs. His face was a picture when a young lad approach him with an autograph book and going into autopilot watched as the kid walked up to Steve Soper who was talking to Mike left Mike in "the signing position" got Steves autograph and walked off a happy chap! The humour was not lost on Mike. RIP
