tgf and jv on ims: where's the beef?
Schumacher and Villeneuve, critiqued the Speedway's 2.606-mile, 13-turn road course, one of the shortest on the circuit, and suggested ways to improve it.
Schumacher said he expected the Speedway to alter the course to make it less congested in the infield and faster on the front straightaway. That didn't happen, although George remains open to the idea of future changes. from the indianapolis star: "It's not really as challenging as other circuits we have because . . . the speed we arrive at the oval is too slow," Schumacher said. "If we would use only the oval, for sure it would be a big challenge." Villeneuve said he likes how the track requires a balanced setup -- low downforce for the long straight, high downforce for the slow infield corners -- but he said the course isn't really of grand prix configuration. "It's a fun track to drive, but it's not a very interesting track (for our cars)," he said. "There's no corner where your heartbeat goes up. It's more like, you know, playing with go-karts with your friends. "There's a (fixed) amount of space (in the infield) and the more corners you put in, the more illogical it becomes. It becomes very Mickey Mouse." |

Its a ridiculous circuit, that double hairpin alone is reason to bulldoze the thing.

i think its ok, thats where the good drivers will be able to take advantage and prepare for their overtaking manouver at the long straight.

BULLDOZE ? EERO, seek cover now I wish they'd just run the oval and be done with it. Would love to see an F1 race on the INDY 500 circuit. Could only make F1 even more interesting IMO. Betchya it would level the playing field a touch more than anywhere else. And if they continue to wreck the few tracks left that offer passing opportunities, this might be the only option left |

Mario Andretti should be the Resident Consultant in any re-design of this circuit. He should know better than anyone else in America what is exciting, what is needed to provide overtaking opportunities, as well as the requirements for safety.

I guess EERO is spot-on, Jersound. I read a story last yearthat the sole reason for the late implementation of the part with the hairpin was that the track was still too short in length.
As botsquad quoted already: "There's a (fixed) amount of space (in the infield) and the more corners you put in, the more illogical it becomes. It becomes very Mickey Mouse." I really don't know how to find more space there, but maybe it's an idea to use two long sections of the oval instead of one. But it shouldn't be only highspeed configuration as the slow corners make it much more difficult of a game set-up and skill-wise for the drivers, like i.e. the Motodrome at Hockenheim making it much more of a challenging track than it may appear only from the long straights. |

JV is spot on. The F1 circus is visiting the most famous oval in the world, don't you think they should incorporate a bit more of it into the circuit itself, other than the first (final) corner and the front straight?
The radical in me agrees with AJ. Let them run on the oval! 10/1 TGF wouldn't race after his recent comments about oval-racing. |
