Last non-tobacco champion?
Just suddenly thought about this.
Following Williams emergence in the title race I started thinking about the last time the championship was won by a non-tobacco sponsored car? I'm thinking 1983 and Nelson Piquet when he was sponsored by Parmalat in his Brabham. |

It must be Piquet, as I don't remember did Williams have Barclay sponsoring them in 1987? If not, then it must be Piquet in 1983

And Keke had Marlboro ads on his helmet and overalls.

Williams started using Barclay advertising in 1988, so the last no-tobacco champion is Piquet in '87.

But the 1987 Williams were sponsered by Camal cigarettes
It was Piquet in the Brabham-BMW in 1983 |

No, not Camel.
ICI Tactel sponsored them from 1983 until 1991, Camel started sponsoring Williams in 1991 or 1992. |

Indeed the 1987 Williams sponsored in yellow by ICI not Camel:
http://www.ifrance.com/F1GT/images/GP/IMGP437e.jpg Camel were involved with F1 that year. Sponsoring (nearlly) all of the Lotuses. One of them even had a yellow helmet! http://www.ifrance.com/F1GT/images/GP/IMGP440a.jpg (now that is tyre graining!!!) More pictures from that year can be found on this website: http://www.ifrance.com/F1GT/Galeries/Gal1987.htm Last edited by Adam43; 14 Jul 2003 at 16:44. |

®îjñtjûh is right after all, I have checked some sources and it seems to be that way. BUT still I have one doubt, if anyone can clear on that, Piquet used to have "Hollywood" logo in his helmet, which is a tobacco brand (BAT). I just don't know the season he had this sponsorship.

Not Hollywood, but I have just found evidence that Piquet was sponsored by Barclay in 1987!

This seems to be the final proof, Barclay in the car, and in the helmet, "Hollywood" (?!)

Well it looks like it just might just be parmalat round the red stripe in 1983, although I'm not 100% sure.
