Where's all that oil coming from????
I took my Mustang in for some dyno-tuning . The engine seemed a little down on power. I've also noticed a small vibration around 1200-1400 rpm , and a little oil leaking.
The first hard pull on the dyno produced oil . Doh !! On closer inspection ,we discovered the harmonic balancer had come loose , and was eating into the timing chain cover. This was where the oil was coming from . We also noticed the timing was set way too high and the fuel way too rich . Finally the No.5 plug wire had melted to a hedder . So ,after fixing all this , she's finally running great . I have not had a chance to pick up the car yet , but it made over 300 hp and 350 lbs tq at the rear wheels . I'm happy with that !! As usual, have fun with it when it's back out. Good thing it wasn't running too lean. That's one thing with all the cars I've had (not many) as they,ve been older ones, and not as clean as the Mustang's innards, I could never tell if any oil was old oil, old old oil, or sort of new oil.

Where's the oil coming from?
In the case of my son's Mazda from the blown head gasket. After a little excursion into the upper limits of water temperature. More work, more cost. The pizza boy had better start delivering. And now he needs the family car to do that in as well. |

Hey, Alan (fast95pony):
I've checked out your site. Nice machine! By the way, are you using the stock T-5 trans.?? A friend of mine has a low-13 sec. 'Stang (all motor) and he feels he's really pushing the limits of the T-5. Plus, I think he's a bit jealous of my T-56! Last edited by DavyboyLT1; 30 Apr 2002 at 17:30. |

Thanks for the interest Monsieur Moffatt, my Mazda's actually not too bad, just the normal little bit of oil here and there, not a problem at all, just enough to look dirty and as I never clean it, it just stays there and collects dirt.

Thanks !! Yeah, I'm waiting for the tranny to go bang. It's just a matter of time... A T-56 would be a nice replacement... Alan |

My machine is still stock, at the moment, but I have many plans. I've spec'd out a package that should give me 450 HP without a power-adder. The extra bonus with 6th gear is that it'll still get reasonable fuel economy. (The rev's are at only 1600 @ 120kph with 3.42 rear) I run up against my buddy at the local strip. I can't quite keep up with his modded machine, but I've run as quick as 13.9@100mph (not too bad for a stock '97). |

my new (to me) car had a recon engine (allegedly), as the dipstick had been moved it was leaking oil from the old hole, I re-plugged it properly, it started coming out of the rocker cover gasket, then from the cap, then the dipstick, and eventually from the flywheel oil seal . . . . .engine came out. I think it was over bored and its over pressurising the crank case forcing it out wherever.
after about 20 litres of oil in 2 months I got a 1700 xflow from a caterham instead, with a catch tank and proper breathers., I now have a leak free quick MK1 Cortina. still havent cleaned up my parking space at work! |
