You've got to get yourself some Matra or BRM old mate if you think that Honda rubbish is good.

Marcus666,
Just log into Youtube and search BRM, and listen to something like "**NEW** BRM V16 Sound" which run for something like 7 minutes of soundtrack around Goodwood. If you don't think that this is one of the most moving motor racig engine sounds, well I don't know what shakes your tree. 18 to 20,000 RPM from a V10 or V8 can sound pretty good but to me there is nothing like some of those earlier F1 engines. To my humble opinion best sounds are made by V12 Matra and flat 12 Ferrari.
Here you can listen the Matra at Paul Ricard not long ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUGceCoAn3Y |

Renault 6 turbo on full qually boost
McLaren TAG on race boost BMW 4 cylinder on boost Honda V12 with someone on it who knows how to drive it. DFV revving its guts off in an FW07 1.5 litre Climax V8 being thread though the Ring like a needle in silk The bark of a DFR or HB V8 on a street circuit A Renault V10 on full howl Pretty much anything before we all had to hear the same sound every meeting. |

Oh and the BRM V16
Quite the most incredible, unique, staggeringly spellbinding sound you will ever hear other than perhaps a Merlin rolling out of a dive How man make these things is beyond me and makes me both proud we did it and sad we are now a total shell of that country |

Wasn't there also an H16?
Ferrari's V12s were amazing, the lasts ones screamed to 17,000 rpm! Some early 90's Ferrari noise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYF3T2LMZCM Mclaren Honda V12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNbgqBnHrMQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lKIoqoJy0M Nice! And then they start the engine. |

This is pretty good too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BmVoxw4s2s Ferrari V12 vs. V10 vs. V8 It is very difficult to get good sound on the older cars travelling at full chat! The Matra V12 and Mazda Rotary sounded very different in their day when driven to the absolute limit by professional racing drivers in competition to what they sound like today on demonstration runs. The modern engines are very good because of the stratospheric rev limits and perfect firing due to FI and electronic engine management. Love the sound of the full power gear shifts, not the sporting implications so much, but then you take what you can get! Perhaps Bernie is right regarding the importance of the sound, what do you reckon? |

Yeah! Absolutely! But noise is just wasted energy, and that's why turbos are so boring, but they do kill two birds with one stone. They harness what would be otherwise wasted energy and stop the people who built their houses next door to motor racing circuits from complaining.

No it was an H16 just as Viva GT posted above.
I have never seen or heard one of them run properly, always sounded a very rough and unhappy engine. On the other hand the BRM V12 was a peach in its day and they would have done a lot better to stick with it. Great engine! Last edited by wnut; 14 Jun 2013 at 08:04. |

The V12 was a good engine although not sure how much development it had left in it as a GP unit. Mazda 787, anybody? Or was that too much of an assault on the ears? Must confess the BRM V16 is probably my favourite sound. I remember, in period, a brief demonstration of the 1997 Arrows by Damon Hill at Brands which sounded pretty fantastic. Was that a Yamaha or Toyota engine in that? Mind you it only lasted a couple of laps before it started chucking out water! Listening from my tent to the Corvettes and DBR9s at night at the 2007 Le Mans left a good lasting impression, too. |

An H16 is 2 flat 8s, one on top of the other.
