Penske signs with Toyota

Toyota will be supplying Team Penske and Kelley Racing with their engines beginning in 2003. In Penske's case, the deal runs through the 2005 season (three years). Principal components will be delivered to the team, and the engines will be assembled in Reading. The team will also serve as one of TRD's designated engine rebuilders.

First Honda in CART, now Toyota in IRL. Penske enjoys Japanese motors.

But it's not surprise Toyota went with them, is it.....

Not so much that Penske enjoys Japanese motors, but rather that he enjoys winning. I'm sure that switching to Honda from Mercedes/Illmor (of which he is a shareholder) wasn't an easy decision. But, hey, it won a couple of championships, and that's all that counts in the end.

But the drivers won't be happy if Toyota experiences the reliability problems that they did when they first entered CART. But for some reason I don't think that they will this time. Bet the blueprint to the engine is already on somebody's desk. I don't think that Penske brought his team over to do development work.

Besides what has been said above, I understand that Roger Penske has become co-owner of some Toyota dealerships in the United States, in Brazil and in Mexico.
