Huge rollover in Aussie Racers
Any word on Travis Edwards??
He had a huge rollover in the kink leading to Penrite yesterday in the VIP Aussie Racer. Not sure how many times it rolled but must have been 6-7. The front right wheel almost landed in my beer! Travis got out of the remains of the car OK then slumped to the ground probably in shock. He was taken away in an ambo but no mention was made of his condition. Hope you're OK Travis. That was a BIG one... |

did you see it on the TV news?
apparently it was shown on all 3 channels last night, did anybody see it? I believe Travis is fine. I saw his father after the last race so the family was still at the track. How tough are those cars!!!

I saw the accident on Sports Tonight & it was quite a scary accident, it would've been one hell of a ride.

Just a comment - why aren't wheel tethers being introduced into all classes of motorsport?

Did anyone see what caused it ? Was he pushed or was it self inflicted ? There seems to bee too many cars in the fields, sure they're small but while it may be ok to have 3 abreast through a corner, you often get 4 or 5 having a go, there seems to be an increase in the carnage in these races and the accidents are getting more serious.

he hit annother car (or that car hit him, i couldnt tell) then he rolled once slowish, then caught the grass and rolled annother 8 times (well i counted 9 rolls).
it will be on trackside next sunday at 2pm. on sky news they showed an angle from someone in the crowd that videos taped it and it looked worse from the amateur camera view. |

Hi guys, thanks for all of your concern. I am ok, albeit very stiff and sore. I was looked after extremely well by the medical team at the track then transferred to Wangaratta Base for x-rays and observation, everything showed up ok and I've just been to my doctor up here on the Gold Coast and have received the all clear.
The car from what I've been told (I haven't seen it yet) is not too badly damaged, despite the cosmetics and extremities. The front end copped most of the brunt which should fairly easily fixed. The car is on it's way back home as we speak and will have to be stripped upon arival, then sent back down to the Aussie Racing Cars workshop in Sydney for the repair. Provided everything is as it seems, we hope to have it back in a couple of weeks, followed by some long hours putting everything back in, and we'll be on our way to Oran Park. It's all a bit disheartening really for the team since it's only been about 3 or 4 months since I rolled at ECR. We'd done brilliantly to recover to 2nd in the championship following that, but now this is really going to hurt us. Lets hope this is the last of it. I'm just very thankful the cars are built as well as they are, if they weren't I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to walk away from either of the rollovers. The well wishes have been flooding in so thank you all, the support being shown makes the recovery process so much easier. cheers Trav |

We did have a rough weekend, which saw us start 2 races from the back of the grid. Sunday was looking so promising. The car was absolutely brilliant prior to the incident, but now it's back the the drawing board. Budget will be the big question now. And on top of it, I'm going to have to fund a new helmet also. A $1000 helmet down the drain after that roll, the good news is that it did it's job. The whole weekend has not been an easy pill to swallow.
We definately plan to make it to Oran park some way or another. I'm even more determined now than I was before, I have a feeling a VIP 1-2 won't be far away. Last edited by EMR39; 26 Jul 2004 at 07:14. |

How keen are these guys???????
Sunday afternoon they're pulling somersaults in a car in Victoria. Monday afternoon they're checking out the forums from Queensland... Glad you're OK Travis. I've finally seen the crash that tops Mezera's at Bathurst in '97. |

I have to say that you were lucky and unlucky that the grass was wet and soft, lucky, because it absorbed and softened the impacts , and unlucky, because I do not think that you would have rolled as much if it was harder and you had not dug in.
But it is good to hear that you are all OK. |

Thankfully the ground was soft to absorb the impact better. I'm told the car surprisingly came out of it with not much more than superficial damage. Just hoping we can get it back on track for Oran Park, so I don't lose any further championship points.

amazing.
i just saw the crash for the first time on trackside , and boy Trav you sure took a hard like there , glad you are ok though and hope you can repair the car for Oran Park. One thing they mentioned during the telecast was that Aussie racers dont run windscreen wipers. why is this ? and is there any plans for them to be fitted in the future ? I would certainly think its a major safety claim that the drivers could put to Phil Ward and the organizers thats for sure. |

it certainly made my day more exciting, he was heading staright towards, and we were contemplating places to hide.
But everything stopped well before the fence, but wheels tend to bounce, so thats what i wa nervous off |

Must have been almost sitting right beside you!
I did keep a lookout for the DJR jacket and beanie but didn't see one. Come to think of it, I don't reckon I've seen one anywhere since about 1994......... |

most of us run products similar to Rain-X on our windscreens. This generally does the job. The real problem we have is fogging up of the windscreens, particularly in weather as cold as Winton. We're working on ways to alleviate that at the moment. The car's being repaired at the moment, and should be ready for us to pick it up on Friday. Bring it back home, bolt all the bits back on and head Down to Oran Park. Fingers crossed, we'll have enough time.

There is a series of 4 pics of the crash from a head on angle by Peter Weaver in todays issue of Motorsport News.
Mind you Peter was in his usual spot at turn 1 at Sandown on the weekend and he showed me the full collection of about 20 pictures. |
