Electronic timing

Does anyone know when electronic timing was introduced into F1? Was it an "overnight" thing or did it run as a trial first? On a similar note, how accurate was stopwatch timing? There must have been some mistakes made over the years where drivers appear much higher (or lower) on the grid than you'd expect....

Having said that errors still occur even with electronic timing, hence Kimi Raikkonen intially being awarded the win in Brazil 2003.

Hi Johnny, didn't realise you were a member on this forum (I'm Swiss Hutless on another..)

kipper, the 2003 brazilian GP was more of a perception problem than straight forward timing problems.

Nothing to do with the timing, just the rules.

@Jim: Thanks for the link, useful stuff.
@Alex: Hi Alex

I was reading in this month's Motorsport that Robin Herd of March once swiped the pitboard across the timing line just before Brambilla arrived and manged to get the car on pole!!!

as another funny timing story aside I heard a story from the old Hong Kong kart grand prix in the late 80s where the officials foolishly positioned the timing beacon past the braking point at the end of the straight. So in qualifying it was quicker, if you were on a hot lap, to just not brake and fly off the track into the barrier. Carnage!
