Nintendo has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Greatest Driving Game Ever

I'm already expecting the winner to be GT4, but do you have any others from an age to throw into the mix 9note i said greatest, not best) or, in other words, the one that did the most to change the genre or move the bar

Given that criteria - GPL, easily

My personal fave atm though is NR2003 - near unbeatable netcode (42 drivers anyone?), effectively the next evolution of the GPL physics engine, nice graphics and great racing. The zenith so far IMO.

Er, see my avatar

Also...
- F355 Challenge in the arcades and on Dreamcast - unparalled realism for an 'arcade' game,

- The original Sega Rally for its awesome handling,

- Microprose Grand Prix 1 and 2 - very realistic for their day,

- Indycar Racing 2 - I still play it now! (mainly cos my computers too rubbish to run any other Indy games, but still...)

GPL

I was late to it, 2002ish I think but still play it pretty regularly now. Classic.

Also of note is Geoff Crammomds Microprose Formula One Grand Prix, back on the Amiga 500. In its day amazing.

Indeed GPL is a groundbreaker and really has not been beaten, Although GTR and GT Legends is definately hot on its heels.

Also another couple of earthmovers have to be GP3 (weather!) and NR2003.

I am thoroughly enjoying GTL at the moment.

As goes the general consensus, it has to be GPL for the physics. However I am really liking GTR which isn't far off.

An honourable mention has to be Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 1. I remember playing it for the first time at the motorsport show at Earl's Court in 1992 and being absolutely amazed!

GP1 - had it on Amiga 500 in the early 1990's - wore the machine out with it!
GP2 - if it had wet weather on it, then I don't think anything would ever have beaten this! Was still using it by 2002/2003 kinda time!

I'm also quite a fan of GTR, namely for the GT theme of it. Would have been so great if it had been based on 1998 instead of 2003...? *daydreams!*

GPL is the greatest, and will only get better with the 69 Mod and the various other mod's that may come out someday.

Any game that i still play almost daily that is 6 years old really is something special.

For Driving - GT3 (GT4 just doesn't have the same punch for some reason) esp with 900deg wheel.

For Racing - GPL & NR2003 (with GTP mod) on the PC (esp with all the addons for both available) & GT3/4 for PS2 - great to see so many different cars and tracks but needs more than 6 vehicles at a time

Special mention to GP2 from Geoff Crammond for making racing games FUN and also SIMish and began the world of race game modding.

It is worth remembering that Stuntcar Racer is another Geoff Crammond production, so we all that game a lot, as out of that came the Grand Prix Series of games. I remember buying Grand Prix when it first came out for the Amiga and spent many many hours playing it.

GPL is probably the most important racing sim. Revs was a milestone and so was GP1. But GPL changed everything with superb physics and multiplayer. It still can stand its own today.

But imho nowadays you gotta spread the ballgame a bit:
GPL for openwheelers
Nascar Racing 2003 for oval racing
GTL and GTR for sports car racing, modern and historic.
LFS for having the best multiplayer part out there.
