I wasn't impressed.

It's basically the original, but the bits where it's been tweaked, they seem to have actually made it worse. It's not as smooth and the difficulty level is extremely inconsistant.

Weird - I cant understand why people would think it's worse, 'cos I think it's miles better than the original one. The AI pit bug has been fixed, so you don't get huge pile-ups at the pit entrance.

He's right about the inconsistent difficulty level, though - places like Kansas can be a walk in the park, and then tracks like Nashville are just horrendous, with hardly any grip - it's more a matter of when your back end gets away from you, rather than if.

If they were making a 2006 game then I'd probably say wait and see, but since it looks like it'll be the last IndyCar game for some time I'd recommend you pick it up on budget/used.

ICS2005 I personally find unplayable.

As said before, it's very similar to the original, but for me the difficulty issues and the fact it's so easy to lose the rear end absolutely kill it. I always find myself eitrher on pole by miles; or at the absolute back depending on the track. No middle ground, no feeling that you're rewarded for setting a good time, just totally random. In the race itself I tend to think it's easier, the original was quite well tuned, there's just not the balance in the sequel.

And it is far, far too easy to lose control. I've watched on TV enough to realise that IRL cars don't just spin off when cornering at 230mph, but in this game slightly early on the throttle and you're sideways. Tap wheels with another car, you're sidways. Strangely, the AI car never is. Hmm.

Turn four at Motegi. If you're good enough to get through it more than ten times over a race distance without losing it you're better than me. It's infuriating.

I wanted to like this game, in the end I cut my losses and accepted it's t*ss.

I only have the original, was playing it again just before F1 05. What a game, although it is a bit easy once you fiddle with setups....

Yep, I hear you there - the Motegi Fastbreak I called it on the Codemasters forums... but by that point they'd fired the team and it was never going to be sorted.

I share your frustration with the game - it's the only IndyCar videogame fix there is and with some minor changes it could be a great racer. I'll never understand why they had to make the back end so happy.

For the tracks that are good, like Kansas, Michigan, Texas, Indy, and a couple of others, it plays great and I can tollerate it. I'll while away hours just dialing in the car without racing it until I'm totally happy with it. If that's your kind of bag then again I'd recommend it if you see it in the bargain bin.

Was playing this again yesterday and you're spot on - on the fast superspeedways it's good. The original's definately a better end product, but because it's based on the 02 season it feels so outdated. If you can overlook the flaws it's worth a tenner, so I retract what I said above, it's only unplayable 50% of the time.

There could be hope for Indycar Series fans here regarding some newer cars;

this part being the most interesting;

There’s real race content from the US too, including the Dodge Charger that’s new on the NASCAR circuits this year. Alternatively, try the open-wheel endurance with the IndyCar Series championship cars at Indianapolis.

I totaly disagree about indycar 05 being worse. I think it has had a little improvement over the first one...once you get used to set ups, starting, avoiding other wrecks and finnishing the race...

so its ok
