I suppose when you look at those poor folks having to live with all that sand gettings in the cracks you can forgive them having the odd fag.
However, I do think the whole thing is a bit of a farce and personally deplore Ferrari resorting to tobacco advertising when they can on a 'technicality'. As far as I'm concerned - fags adverts out everywhere for good. |

Yet Philip Morris and other tobacco companies agreed to "International Marketing Standards" back in 2001, which stated that:
"As from December 1, 2006, no sponsorship shall be provided unless: (a) there is a reasonable basis upon which to believe that attendance at the sponsored event or activity will comprise no less than 75% adults, and (b) there is a reasonable basis upon which to believe that the sponsored event or activity will not be of particular appeal to youth, and (c) the Participant does not anticipate that the sponsored event or activity will receive exposure, other than as a news item, on television or radio or the Internet, unless such exposure complies with these Standards, and (d) success in the principal activity associated with the sponsorship does not require above-average physical fitness for someone of the age group of those taking part." |

Frankly Ferrari should have tried harder to secure other sponsorship. Every other Formula One team has sought after and found other sponsors.

the cigarette sponsorship ban was enforced by the EU so only the european rounds are affected by this.

Seeing that Marlboro logo definitely got to me...
I haven't lit up since Maggie was PM and I almost killed my mate trying to get out of the door to buy a pack. I just have NO control over my urges when it come to adverts... ...I'm so glad it's back to the safety and security of EU bans next race. I don't know what I might have done if I had to look at that Marlboro logo any longer. I shudder at what's going to happen when I see those Foster's adverts at the USGP. It may be back to the rubbish bin; looking for a bit to eat as my life spirals out of control because of alcoholism. |

The re-appearance of Marlboro branding on the Ferraris did not result in I or my family racing out the door to take up smoking. What a farce anti-smoking legislation is – if its legal to buy it, it should be legal to promote it. Either that or make it illegal - but of course govts would miss out on all that tax wouldnt they. I know its been discussed before but it remains the ultimate in political double standards

Everytime Ferrari got onto the podium the name 'Marlboro' will be mentioned during the press conference. I think that annoucement alone is worth millions.

Interesting point, this. grandprix.com is in no doubt that Marlboro are at odds with their fellow signatories of that agreement.

Ive always thought that Tobacco sponsorship looks very nice on any car.
Though I hate smoking itself, the tobacco logos always look nice and proffessional. |

I also thought there was some ban (especially in France) which prohibiited its media outlets from even showing tobacco logos during sporting events, even if it was legal in the country where the sport was being shown...
But personally I think it was a horrible move, as Ferrari is holding F1 to the tobacco era and this could come back to bite them later on... |

Being a nonsmoker myself, I think the best kind of cigarette advertising are the logos on empty packets of cigs that didn't make it into a trashcan, but lie around on the ground somewhere, because every time an addicted smoker sees one of those, he or she will be wondering if their's still something in their packet.
The best-looking tobacco company logo used to be the bright blue and white that was on the Benetton which was taken over by Renault. And the Coca Cola Scuderia Ferrari car looks like the definite threat to Red Bull Racing! |

The tobacco ban is why the races are being moved from Europe.

Coco Cola will not pay the $XYZ millions that Marlboro are paying Ferrari just to have a red car with Marlboro occasionally displyed (when it doesn't conflict with local advertising bans).
Incidentally Coco Cola in Australia/NZ is entering the alcohol/alcopop end of the liquour market to the horror of anti smoking/anti alchohol advertising groups. Talk is that they have a captive youth market that will end up drinking to excess.... They don't need to spend squillions on car racing to penetrate their markets... |
