Sponsorship (Specifically V8's)
Interesting comment I heard whilst watching Sunday morning's Ch 10 HD NASCAR event. Commentary were discussing one driver - the exact words I can't recall, but the gist was this:
"It's a sign of the times but [insert driver name here] is losing ALL of his sponsors on that car for next year due to the current economic climate" Which made me think - how many teams, V8's, could be in the same boat? I know a few have been discussed here - but this particular comment/driver whilst at first appearing to be quite radical is, if you stop and think about it, not as ludicrous as it might seem. |

It's definitely not ludicrous. This is the very worst situation for a team to be in at the moment if they were trying to sign, or re-sign, sponsors. The uncertainty of what's going to happen in the next 12-18 months reduces the amount of companies willing to commit to large sums of marketing budget over the next 2 years.
Generally in a downturn marketing departments & budgets are the first to get hit (have a look at ACP, NineMSN & Yahoo7 as very recent examples). As for existing sponsorships, sure, it's possible that major sponsors will pull out, but unless sponsorships are linked then unlikely that they would lose all of them in one hit. Then again, if you have a look at some of the teams operating, if a team lost their major sponsor in addition to losing the manufacturer support as is happening, that would equate to practically all their sponsorship money. Could be some tough times ahead for quite a few teams. Last edited by eduardo1; 9 Nov 2008 at 12:26. |

GM to run out of cash mid 2009
With GM reported to run out of cash mid 2009, Associated Press are reporting the concerns of senior NASCAR names Chev sponsored e.g Dale Earnhardt.
GM want USA government cash for survival ... withdrawing expenditure on motorsport must be a near certainty. GMH will not have a choice, the decision will be made Stateside. |

Well things dont seem that bad for the V8 Supercars - especially with the announcement of Citzen Watches sponsoring SBR for the next couple of years and with Jim Beam staying on with DJR for three more years - things seem pretty good at the moment, but you never know what the future holds especially with the economic shape of Ford Australia and how GM's struggles will affect Holden.....

Wish I'd recorded that NASCAR race now so I could work out which car they were talking about because they definately said 'all sponsors' not just one!
But that aside - how many sponsosrs, six months ago, could have foreseen what is happening in the financial markets? Sure, Citizen and Jim Beam are currently signed up for 3 or so years - but if the market turns ugly there is no saying what will happen. As for contracts...well wasn't ITV's F1 contract due to expire next year when they decided to terminate it this year? |

Nationwide - is that the main or secondary category? Whichever, Ambrose was also running (about 13th IIRC) in the same race yesterday.
dsg - don;t believe so - they specifically mentioned the economy as the reason for the car losing all of its sponsors and then commenting on whether they will see any more of this happening - thus my question about the 'isolation' Australia has (or doesn't have) |

It was the Nationwide series ( http://www.nascar.com/races/bg/2008/..._official.html ) - without seeing images of the cars not sure who they were talking about though - predominantly white background so that would narrow it down.
(Aren't they all short with round faces? |

Tony Cochrane mentioned in an interview with AA that the championship could lose cars with the current economy and Ford, Holden problems.

from memory they were talking about the Camping World one, sorry I can't be more specific as I don't follow the series that much & don't know who the driver or team are, but was watching when it was mentioned during the nationwide series

Correct, they were talking about Kevin Harvick's #33 team in the Nationwide series.
