Indeed, it was a revised version of the F1 engine, 440bhp at 10.800 RPM max complementing Dani's precise data about the engine. (The F1 version was 470bhp at 12.600 RPM for the sake of comparison)

I could be horribly wrong but I believe the b stands for "boxer".

The F1 car was the 312B (for Boxer) , the prototype was initially the 312P and then 312PB

Had to share this, which I found doing a quick poke around.

Is that not a delicious sports car?

When did the Boxer first get use in the F1 car, was that in 1970? I know it was used in the sports cars in 1971, when Ferrari developed the 312PB for the endurance championship, having largely lost faith in the 512 concept I guess, or else planning for the future

First use of the boxer was indeed in 1970, the move from the 312 v12 to the 312B. But check the following text!!!!

Found in http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame...php&carnum=154

Outwardly similar to a boxer engine, the Forghieri was a flat V-engine. The difference between a boxer and a flat V engine is the shape of the crank and the ignition sequence; a boxer engine's opposing pistons move towards each other whereas a V engine's pistons move in unison. The big advantage over the 60 degree V12 engine used in the previous 312 P was the low height of the 180 degree engine. This helped to decrease the car's overall height and to lower the centre of gravity, which helped handling.

It is indeed, though the '69 coupe that you have pictured was the least successful of the series. The open '69 312 was quick, but usually completely outnumbered by 908s. The coupe, pictured above, only appeared in works form at Le Mans I believe (though they appeared later in privateer hands) and was slow as well as unfortunate. One of the cars was involved in the horrible accident that claimed the life of John Woolfe on the opening lap.

The '71 312P was very fast - faster than the Alfa T33 and the 908/3s, both of which claimed vioctories during the season. It was, however, extremely unlucky, being taken out in two separate events by the same backmarker! In any case, the '71 car was always going to struggle to beat the JWA 917s, especially on faster circuits, but Ferrari got all the development and bad luck out of the way that season, hence their incredible 100% record in 1972.

Certainly, the car never did end up with a very good record, and I think quickly went into privateer hands, which didn't help. I just love the look of the thing, probably more then the 512's or even the 917's. It is brutal but also somewhat dainty. Another even more evocative photo of a 312P coupe in on the jacket cover, and inside, of the NART entered car at Sebring, in the Hurst book 12 Hours of Sebring, 1970. Wonderful photo front-on of a night stop for damage, fumes pouring out of different orifices, and Chineti in the murk in the background in white shirt and suit jacket, overseeing the stop.

Yes, great looking car and interesting subject, but, just to be pedantic, given its age, wouldn't this be better in the historics thread?

Maybe where the thread would get a different viewing audience and subsequently be assigned to history too?

The thread, wherever it is, will eventually be consigned to history, anyway. So .... maybe now would be a good time to move it to get that different viewing audience and just possibly extend its life with some fresh comments, or .... maybe not! Still think it would sit more obviously there though!
