A trip to Austria
Hi guys,
Contemplating visiting Austria. Love the track more than anything. Thinking of going to see the race. Any tips/pointers? What's the closest airport? What's the camping situation like? Are gen-ad tickets ok? Thanks! Selby |

closest airports are bratislava (ryanair), vienna (easyjet, ba), graz (lufty indirect via frankfurt or munich i think), trieste, and the smaller usually seasonal ones like klagenfurt, salzburg, and innsbruck. and if you're looking a bit further, ljublana (wizzair, probably), and munich, potentially prague or brno too. if you wanted to do the going gets weird, weird turn pro thing, then iberia from lhr or lgw (iberia express) via madrid is daft but fun, and lufthansa or swiss are worth a look too.
camping, judging by the jungle drums was very well organised and there was plenty to do, but very expensive compared to other events because the red bull ring doesn't do things by halves, they do things properly and you pay accordingly. if you camp iirc last year you weren't allowed to leave on sunday. sounds a bit draconian but whilst it's just off a dual carriageway it's still the arse end of nowhere and the traffic made the f1 lot spit their dummies. non-camping accomodation is mostly either airbnb or some hotels in graz. personally if i was considering doing the gp, i would fly into munich with a proper airline like ba and book an extra bag if necessary for your tent and camping guff (stuff it in a cardboard box, reinforce the edges with tape and corrugated cardboard, giant cling film to waterproof it), book a hire car category that included estates, and drive from there. if you get an estate then you can always sleep in the boot if it chucks it down, and if it doesn't it makes a good socialising and storage space. but just to be contrary, my advice is to bin off the f1 and go for the elms/formula renault 3.5 meeting there instead. elms is usually free of charge, with paid paddock access at the most. free range, very quiet, the good stands are open and it's a 2 day event. |

If you don't want to camp at the circuit, Knittelfeld is a pretty small city so hotels will probably be expensive. Leoben might be an alternative, which is 30 minutes away by train. I hope you decide to go there, so you can report back what it's like. I wanted to go as well but don't have time for it sadly. Maybe next year, or Monza later this season |

I'd probably like to camp on site, I reckon! I can't find any details about it at all. There wasn't even an option for a gen-ad ticket with camping!
