from f1-live.com
Stewards of the Brazilian GP reconvened at the FIA HQ in Paris, France this morning where, as expected, they overturned the original outcome of Sunday's race, announcing Jordan driver Giancarlo Fisichella as the rightful winner.

Last weekend's race results came under review after the FIA "received evidence" suggesting that there was an error in the timing and the Jordan driver had started his 56th lap before the race was red-flagged, instead of his 55th as previously thought.

The new result means the first ever win for Giancarlo and the fourth for Jordan, while the McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen has been demoted to second. It also means that in the first three races of the 2003 season, we have seen three different winners

Good result. I wonder if the FIA will re-run the podium ceremony prior to the race at Imola, as a gesture.....would be nice for Fizzi and EJ to take the glory they deserved, rather than get the trophies handed back in the paddock.

Interesting comment from the BBC sport website:
Quote:
The decision to review the rule was made at a meeting of F1 teams this week.
A top-level F1 source said: "The rule is under review, but care should be taken to ensure any change covers every imaginable scenario and doesn't make things worse in some cases."
The rule was not directly responsible for the problem in Brazil but it has highlighted the potential problems.
It emerged at the meeting that no-one could remember why there was a two-lap countback rule for the specific circumstances that arose in Brazil.
And there was concern that it was only because Fisichella was into his 56th lap that he would now be declared the winner.
Had the race been stopped a matter of seconds earlier - when Fisichella was still on his 55th lap - the two-lap countback rule would have dictated Kimi Raikkonen be named as winner even though the Finn had lost the lead on lap 54.
"In this case, we will have the right result, but the question is why is the rule there and is there a need for it," the source said.
"It's been there a long time, so there might be a good reason why it's there."
The countback rule was introduced to deal with aggregate races, where two parts of a race that had been stopped have to be added together to create the final standings.
The idea was to ensure that the standings when the first part of the race was stopped were accurately reflected.
But F1 figures accept that in the case of Brazil - where the result was declared because the race had run more than 75% of its scheduled distance - the rule could have led to the wrong winner being declared.

YES!! This is fantastic, I am so happy for Fisichella, I really was worried he'd never win a race at the start of this season. Even now, no matter what happens, he is a GP winner

That just trashed McMerc's hat trick of wins.

Fisichella's win is due - he is an under rated driver for sure - but I really thought that Kimi's effort at the beginning of the race when he was duelling with the top guns was good enough for the win.

OK - congratulations to Giancarlo and Fast Eddie Jordan!

I'm overjoyed at this. Fisichella was the right winner under the circumstances, and, if he really had enough fuel to reach the finish (which is possible, remember that he pitted after 6 laps under the initial safety car), he would've won had the race gone the distance.

Here's one for the statisticians - when's the last time two different drivers took their first wins in 2 successive races?

In 1982 I believe three drivers scored their maiden wins in three races. Can't remember the drivers, but Rosberg was one of them.

Well done Fisi. Nice bloke, let's hope he gets some more wins in a more conventional manner.

Good news for Jordan FORD too.

I'm sure Ron and the others won't mind too much because of course Macaroon is a bit dominant at the moment isn't it?

Oh and we now have Ralf on the same score as JPM but with more finishes.

Elio de Angelis would have been the one just before Rosberg, but as to the third I'm not sure... Could it have been Michele Alboreto at Caesar's Palace?

The amended result means Fisichella wins from Raikkonen, Alonso and David Coulthard (McLaren), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Sauber) and Jacques Villeneuve (BAR). Webber loses his seventh place finish, as he had not crossed the line on lap 54, so Jarno Trulli (Renault) and Ralf Schumacher (Williams) complete the point scorers.

Its really a mockery that I spotted this as and when it happened, and it takes other people days to notice.

I actually posted a reply stating just what happened on Sunday during the final lap, but no-one here took any notice or picked up on what I said...

I can only say "I told you so".
