V8star is just a silohette series. A bit like Eurocars and Ascar whilst DTM has manufacter backing.

Yes, I find V8 Star to be a very amusing series--even if the cars (Jag) look like the real ones (Jag), powered by the real ones (Jag), they technically aren't the real ones (Jag)! Actually, why weren't the V8 Star series allowed to use the manufacturer name? There's nothing to stop them legally? OTOH, I guess the organizers don't want to give any manufacturer free PR?

How do they refer to the cars since they can't mention the name? "Look at Lohr race past Cecotto in her ******? car??? 4 wheel mechanical device? I have to say it's a pretty cool concept though. Where else can you see a Jag S Type racing around a track?

I went to a DTM race and a V8STAR race this year and DTM is a real car-selling show of the manufacters.
V8STAR is real racing.
That's great.
I like V8STAR more than DTM.

As i understand it it was Jaguar's request that they don't use logos/names, not the organiser's decision. What's to stop them legally? Well "Jaguar" and the leaping cat logo are trade marks owned by Ford Motor Co. It would be like making a cheap pair of lookalike demins and sewing a Levis 501 label on them.

I think VW either give backing or endorsement to the team that race the "Passat" in V8 Star.

This is the first instance of a manufacturer not letting one of it's cars be allowed to carry the manufacturers name, even if it is a privateer car. In the BTCC, Alfa and Lexus gave no support to the BTC Tourers last year, but the teams using the cars still called them by their real names.

Besides the Jaguar S Type, VW Passat, there is the Ford Focus (or is it the Ford Mondeo??), Opel Astra, Toyota Aristo (Lexus GS400), possibly the Toyota IS200 (Lexus IS300) and Audi A6.

You can find out more about the series, including some short video clips at www.v8star.com

The difference with the BTCC car is that they were built from actual models. The V8STAR bodyshells are merely lookalikes, they share no components with the actual road cars they are supposed to represent. It's a bit like NASCAR, or the plastic bodies you can buy for RC models.

You may notice that the V8STAR website at no time do they refer to the cars by the 'manufactorer' name. It's not called a Jaguar (for example) because it isn't a Jaguar.

Thanks for the link kmchow...I was looking for a good V8 Star site last night but I couldn't find one. It seems as if many of the former DTM and STW drivers have gone over to the V8 Star series...I guess DTM is more expensive

Well why are Ford not allowing the Jaguar name to be used in V8-Star? at least the Jaguar S-Type bodyshell is winning and being successful, something that their rather expensive venture into F1 isn't being at the moment!!

I find the V8Star series to be too frustrating. All they can do is refer either to the team or driver. They can't mention a manufacturer's car. And I'm used to the manufacturer's car being discussed. yeah, yeah, call me boring, but I absolutely would love it if they could mention something like "The Zakspeed S Type is looking particularly competitive at this race". Instead, they probably say "The Zakspeed racing car is looking competitive this round". While this non-mentioning term is okay if used occassionally, when it is constant, it drives me nuts.

just think how hard it must be for the commentators, not mentioning the names of the cars!

I agree with you kmchow, that would be annoying...I found it frustrating looking at the V8 Star results without the car type beside it. Anyway, what I wanted to ask you is, where have you seen V8 Star before? Was it on television? Because I have never seen it on Speed Channel or anything so...

Nope, Speedvision doesn't carry it. I recall hearing about the proposal for such a series as well as reading it in Autosport. Actually, I think Motorsport Mundial MIGHT have short blurbs or videos of the races. Alternatively, you can go to their website and download their short video clips. I haven't watched them myself yet. Or, if you have PAL (??) system or are willing to spend another $20-30 to convert it to NTSC, you can spend $15US and buy a 30minute video of the '01 series. It's all at the official website.

If memory serves me correctly, wasn't it Alfa Romeo that first proposed this series after the collapse of the DTM? Or was it some other series?
