Spraying kart componenets?

I've fallen in love.....with black kart wheels! Currently i have the normal chrome looking ones and can not find any and more to the point, can't afford any! So am wanting to spray paint mine however am not 100% sure what a good idea this is. I recently sprayed my Rotax exhaust with heat resistant paint and it both looks and lasts fantastic. would the same piant be ok for the wheels or do i need other piant? I have heat resistant stuff or car spray paint. I also want to spray the floor tray though their shouldnt be any problem in that i shouldnt have thought?
Any recommendations?

James

Don't use high temp paint as it needs to get hot to cure properly. For ally wheels normal spray paint is best. Prime with etch or normal primer but key the surface with 240 grade wet or dry and clean with cellulose just before painting.

personally i wouldn't recommend spraying rim's (from experence in my early kart day's) i too, love black rim's and i think they look the right dog's nut's, if done properly! When i tried to do it myself(i did everything right with primer etc...)it didnt work out too good bcause as soon as you go out on the circuit and hit a kerb with the rim (it happens to everyone!)the paint starts to flake off, and by the end of a full hard days racing it looks, like its been painted on by your 5year old brother!

I have had my rims powdercoated and they have lasted very well.
It looks better if you do not have the edge of the rim coated. This also is good for when you rub wheels with someone as there is no paint to have scratched.
The best way is to buy some CRG Magnesium wheels!

If you must paint them, I would mask off anything around the bead-area, overspray there is not good. I always had the best luck anodizing mine black, looked great and lasted.

I was worried about the Bead. It's those CRG wheels which have left me breathless. If i see any second hand i might try and get them if the paint dosen't work. I'll give it a try at the weekend

Edwards wheels in aussie do a very nice Aluminium wheel that is matt black. They are fitted on some of the arrow karts. Check their web site as they might have a UK agent. They are half the price of CRG Mag wheels.

Powdercoating is the best, its basically like a plastic coating that sticks very strongly to the wheel. Its only downside is in about 5 years time when it starts pealing its a right @rse to get it off.
