wodonnell should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I am trying to put together some info on the 1979 CART season.

Can anyone explain the scoring system which was used?

At first I though that the points were linked to the number of laps in the race but it doesn't follow for the whole season.

In one race the winner got 1000 points whilst in others only about 200 were given.

Also, it appeared that anyone who started the race automatically got some points.

Does anybody know which teams actually took part in the season? All I have found so far are the sponsors of the cars.

Any info will be very useful.

Try this web site:

http://www.motorsport.com/stats/champ/index.asp?Y=1979

This site has all the stats for ChampCar racing.

I wish I could. It seems to me that 500 mile winners got 1000pts and 200 to 300 for 125-200 milers. Looks like the old USAC scoring system.

This site only has the sponsor/chassis/engine listed for each driver. When CART had their timing done by Omega that site had all the stats and it also included the team names. Unfortunatly that site no longer has the CART stats.

Hope this helps a bit.

cheers

I noticed references to the Omega site when I did searches but the pages directed me to the motorsport site.

I have managed to fill in some gaps as details of the current teams seem to be readily available. I know that Patrick Racing entered more drivers than those listed on motorsport and that Penske ran a couple of cars.

I guess if I could just get hold of as much as a list of competing teams I would be able to put at least some of it together.
