Drive of the Race
Only one man for me
MARK WEBBER !!!! Well done Minardi, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait !! Praise should also go to Mika Salo & Toyota, Kimi Raikkonen and Eddie Irvine, after such a bad qualifying session. What a wicked race, although the first lap accident could have been very nasty. Luckily, though, they all emerged unhurt. CAN'T WAIT FOR MALAYSIA !!!!! Last edited by Mark F1; 3 Mar 2002 at 15:05. |

I voted for Webber. Michael drove a great race and his battle with Montoya was really exciting - especially when he passed him on the outside.
But I think the driver of the race was Webber. He drove a great race and put Salo to shame in many wanys - which wont please Mika but then thats that! |

Michael ...
He managed to evade the troubles in front of him by going off track, and won back his position by putting lots of pressure on Trulli, Coulthard and Montoya. |

How can there be any doubt it's Michael. Before the weekend, everybody was putting him off as unlikely winner, and criticising Ferrari's decision. But he had shown his rivals in new cars, and proved all critics wrong, all the way throughout every session, and comes race day, he fought and he conquered, quite grandly too.
But Webber is close...He held his own against a much faster car. Using the product of the smallest F1 team, he put the biggest team to shame! |

WEBBER!!!!! BRINGS TEARS TO THE EYES... HAS WORKED HIS BUTT OFF TO GET IN F1 AND I DIDNT THINK HE WOULD DO IT AFTER LAST SEASON IN F3000 BUT HE PROVED ME WRONG. lots of stuff went wrong on his car but he kept it on the road to the flag in style. Fantastical!

Has to be Mark Webber! Two points in his debut race, at home in Australia, for Minardi. Nothing more to be said!!!
Of course TGF turned out the mandatory excellent drive we all expect, and Salo deserves a mention for getting Toyota a point in their first race. |

Drive of the race - Mark Webber
Kimi Raikkonen did very well too. One question, why are Montoya and Michael on the list? |

the Webbmaster. as i understand, his diff was a bit buggered and was lucky to hang on for as long as the end of the race - a fantastic good will story and i think everybody had lumps in their throats when they saw stoddart rushing to greet his driver and the team in utter happiness. fantastic.

After passing JPM, TGF only had to keep it on the black stuff as it was unlikely the Ferrari would suffer any technical gremlins.
Meanwhile, Mark Webber, Driver of the Race, had to cope with a car whose diff had packed up virtually at the start, had to cope with a 30 second plus pitstop and then hold off Salo in the final laps. Yet he handled it with the maturity of a grand prix veteran. |

As someone mentioned, Mark Webber, 1st ever race, 5th at home grand prix in a Minardi, how can you top that. That aside, Michael stamped his authority on this years championship, pushing JPM to an also ran. The opposite to what many here predicted. One thing is for sure, with 6 strong cars we are in for a great season. |

Im sorry it was a good drive, but how can you say a man who managed to beat De La Rosa (Lost lap in pits), Yoong(!) and Salo (Lost lap due to damaged, car still damaged) has the drive of the race.
It was wonderful to see a breath of fresh air, great things should come Webbers way. But get a grip! there was scarcely anyone there for him to beat, he wasn't exactly racing, just hanging in there. I sorry, I hate him but Schumacher had the drive of the race. |

Webber. Simply superb. I can't possibly describe how it felt to see him cross the line for those 2 points, but needless to say I had tears in my eyes. Brilliant.
I think Montoya deserves a mention for that great pass and his general effort in the race, also Mika Salo and Alex Yoong. |

Absolutely Webber. He did the very best that could possibly have been expected of him and did not make a single mistake all day, absolutely flawless under that much pressure. What do you do next when you have exceeded your goal for the year in March?
