Assegai

I'm looking for some information on this F1 car which raced in South Africa in the early 60's. I know that it was built in South Africa and has an Alfa Romeo engine in it. Would appreciate any help...

The Assegai was entered for 1962 South African Grand Prix and failed to make the starting grid. A Lotus 7 took part in the same race and did creditably!

A very distinctive car, the Assegai. From a South African website: www.formulalibre.co.za/

You can probably find more pictures at:

www.motorpics.co.za

This is a picture agency, but you can register instantly for free! Best source of South African pictures anywhere, but a bit difficult to search (unless you have plenty of time to browse their thumbnails!)

Really? I must've missed this one! Seriously, I think you're talking about the Rand GP that year...

Duh! Michael I must have read that three or four times and completely missed it! You're right, it was the Rand GP!

The car was built by Tony Kotze and his team. Tony raced a Lotus 16 Climax before that.
It was rather unreliable but a good looker.
If you are interested in the South African F1 scene it is worth subscribing to Classic Car Africa, Box 2208, Bedfordview 2210.
It is a quarterly mag run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.

The Assegai (meaning "spear" in Zulu) was NOT on the entry list for the 1962 SAGP, but for the supporting "Daily Dispatch Trophy Race" - a F1 event for the local drivers who were not accepted for the World Championship race.

(A bit of "elucidation". Maybe it was originally entered but it was NOT accepted for the GP)

The entrant was Bond Cars.

At one time there was a story bandied about that a team of Assegai would contest the 1963 World Championship! (How true I do not know?)
