New Marshall
Hello fellow Marshals.
I shall soon be joining you as I am doing National Diploma in Motorsports at Myerscough and I'm doing my first event (hopefully) at Cadwell in Oct as part of my course. Could any of you give me advice of what and not take me as I am one of those who always has to be prepared for everything. IE, cold weather, rain coat, T-Shirt etc and will end up taking too much and just any other info. Thanks |

Pretty much covered there!
Take everything! Seriously, make sure you are equipped to keep warm and dry (You can always take layers of clothing off if you get an unexpected heatwave at cadwell) Also, take plenty of fluids and enough butties to see you through the day. I hope you enjoy your experience of marshalling for what it is, and not just because it's a part of a course you have to undertake! Let us know on here how you get on! yep you pretty much covered it, which is just as well as the weather up there in the deepest darkest north can be cold and wet. Surprised Mike F hadn't warned you of that, but then he is a northern jessy!!
As Mark says, have fun and enjoy it. Listen to what the others on post have to say and benefit from their experience and remember not to worry about making mistakes, we all do (make mistakes that is, and worry too,) and look out too for John Watson, he's a good'un but don't stand still for too long whilst he's around (he'll tell you why!) Always ask if you're not sure, it's only silly if you don't ask, remember we all were new boys (or girls) once.
Hope you enjoy it & get hooked like the rest of us. |

Set of dry clothes in the car is a good idea so you can change at the close of play - pack them apart from the rest of your kit, that way you don't take them on to post and get them wet!
A bin liner is a good idea to place your bag in when it rains. Take more food and drink than you think you will ever need. Unbreakable flasks are great, the larger ones stay hot longer. Don't take pork pies (dancooke will explain)! GSOH is a must. (Above is a good example). Ear defenders come useful too. Cadwell is a great track, even if the views are limited in places. Enjoy it |

After Friday at Silverstone - remember your boots (preferably waterproof)!!!!!!
And even if you remember your boots, also remember to take dry socks and other shoes to wear on the drive home (towel is not obligatory) - dry feet going home is one of those "moments". And after a combined 35-40 years experience between us - forgetting to "put the boots in" was a major mistake! Shelagh & Bill |

Take a Black Bin Liner in case it rains - it's the best way of keeping your kit dry if it rains all day.

Remember a good pair of gloves, keeps your hands cosy and safe.
Might find a big bag of sweets goes along way to gaining that much desired upgrade signature as well . Last edited by shjo558; 15 Sep 2005 at 19:34. Reason: Cos English isn't my first language........ |

The best quote I've seen (and I think it was b1ackr0w who said it) is, if you see a group of marshals standing chatting, they're not excluding you, they just haven't got round to inviting you yet. Just wander up, say hello and introduce yourself as a new marshal to join in.

Wear steel toe capped boots if you have them. You'd be surprised how easy it is to push a car onto your foot!
Try to avoid wearing colours that clash with the flags, especially red or yellow. I think most advice has been given earlier about keeping warm and dry. Just have a good day and if you have any questions, ask. Oh yes, don't worry if you hear marshals taking the p*** out of each other. It's just the nature of the beast that we tend not take things seriously until the brown smelly stuff hits the fan. |

Paul,
How dare you say we don't take things seriously until the s**t hits the fan - what sort of attitude are you implying we have? Ah - yes - we go out there to enjoy ourselves above all else, but we are essentially professionals when the going gets tough. Take it all back - you summed it up nicely! |
