I heard Panis insisted - he drove with #9 when he won at Monaco in 1996. He must be very superstitious.

That's true. I remember there were many comments on the fact that he had the same number on his car that his father had.

From a pre-season report on yahoo (I think) it sounded like a superstition thing, ironic considering they have "Luckies" plastered all over their car.
Something to do with Panis winning Monaco in a no.9 (Ligier?). And 10 is a nice round number which reads, "1" (as opposed to "6") when viewed upside down. It's a bit pointless if you ask me: It's unlucky to be superstitious |

This is a bit off-topic, but on the subject of numbering superstitions...
If you look at the race entry lists for Italian and French GP's during the 1950s, you very often find the entire field has even numbers, because of superstition about carrying an odd number. Just thought you'd like to know! |

Interesting !
And how is the numbering applied today ? Is there any rules or any team can choose, except for the number 1 and 2 ? Another question, how come to FIA to number 0 to Damon Hill and... It was Prost at Williams too ? I always thought it was something dumb to put 0 to a car... because it means nil, null, nule, nothing. |

Number 1 goes to the reigning champion, and his team mate automatically gets number 2 for the new season. In the case of the 1993 season, Nigel Mansell was the reigning champion, but he was off earning himself an Indycar title.
So the Williams team gave up Red 5 (Nige's 1992 number) and 6, and took on the mantle of champion team. But Damon wasn't to be given 1, and Prost didn't fancy being 0. Damon wasn't the first to carry 0 in a GP. Jody Scheckter had it on a McLaren around 1973/4. But right now I can't for the life of me remember where, or why. |

Thanks again Tim.
By the way, the number 13 is worldwide cursed, and there are buildings that doesn't have it. Just a hint, don't try to give the 24 number to a brazilian driver, he surely will give you the finger !!!!! |

Re: Why Villeneuve Have The # 10 ?

Pollock said it was because Panis won his only race with number 9 on the car; but it seems a bit silly 'coz it was a very lucky win (only three cars reached the finish in that race Panis won, and it seems to be highly improbable to happen another time). BTW, that strange numbering seems to have surprised the team itself: if you look at the BAR site, there are still little animations in wich Jacques has the # 9 and Panis has the 10. I'm still wondering what really happened... Regarding the last race, Jacques raced with the T car 'coz his race car's engine blowed up in the warm up; but anyway he had an older chassis than Panis. BAR has always been a two car team, that's for sure! |

Maybe Jacques has his own reason to avoid "9"?

It would seem the logical explanation for this is what's been said previously on this topic:
Panis in the no. 9 because he won at Monaco in a no. 9 (reason: superstition). Villeneuve in the no. 10 because it has a "1" in it, albeit followed by a "0" (reason: because he wants to be world champion again). |

BAR chassis for Monaco GP
I've just read this:
OP race car 06 - spare car 05 JV race car 04 - spare car 03 ?????? If that's true, JV's race car will be older than Panis' spare car! I can't believe this!!!!!!!!!!! |

Earlier in the season when DC said he had been driving the same car for a couple of races. He said that although the cars are supposedly the same that each car was 'slightly' different. So he planned to keep his car clean (no off roading) so that he could keep that chasis as long as he could before the team stripped it down and rebuilt it. When they rebuild the car depends on how much wear and tear it has had. So if JV has kept his car on the course without doing much damage or he could be a bit religous about it (might that be his podium car?) it is understandable.
BTW DC promptly went off track during the practice after making the above comments. |
