Ideal F1 governance structure
Sorry if there is already a thread on the topic. Also I won't claim that I know how everything works behind the scenes in F1 or the below proposal is perfect. It's just to create some food for thought.
We all know F1 governance structure is dysfunctional in a lot of ways and as a result F1 is shooting itself in the foot on a regular bases. With liberty comming in and with rumours of Ross Brawn considering a role. What would be an "ideal" governance structure for F1. Problems with the current structure (feel free to add): 1 Too many layers: strategy group, F1 commission, world council 2 Too many people at the table in the strategy group 3 Not all teams represented in the strategy group 4 Too many knee jerk proposals from the strategy group, not solving problems at the core. 5 Too many parties having influence on stuff they should not have influence on The proposal: So in stead of having three layers, make two layers where the first layer is split between technical/sporting matters and promotional/financial matters which both follow through to the second layer; the world council. Something along those lines: F1 Technical commission Technical and sporting regulations decisions by 70% vote FIA (chair): 3 votes FOM: 2 votes Teams: 2 votes Effectively this means the FIA always has to agree, but needs agreement from either FOM or the teams. A person like Ross Brown would be a very suitable candiate to head such a commision. This commision would meet regularly and obviously has the authority to appoint Technical workgroups. F1 Commercial commission Promotional and financial decisions by 70% vote FOM (chair): 3 votes FIA: 2 votes Teams: 2 votes Promotors: 2 votes Sponsors: 2 votes Tyre supplier: 1 vote Ind. Engine supplier: 1 vote Headed by Ecclestone and later his succesor. Decides on all promotional and financial matters and does meet a few times a year. What would you guys say, a suitable model? What would work, what wouldn't (apart from current stakeholders never agreeing to such a massive change)? Let's hear it. |
