List of the different marshal roles

I have a friend that is interested in becoming a marshal but would like to do something not on the bank. As I'm only interested in being a course marshal I don't really know exactly what all the other roles are.

I remember seeing a list once that listed every possible role but I can't find it now. I've looked on the msa site, volunteers in motorsport, bmmc site etc but can only find bits that say there are lots of different rolesbut doesn't say what they all are. So does anyone know where I can find such a list so that I can point my friend in the right direction?

http://www.marshals.co.uk/resources/89392146700.pdf - bottom of page 2 gives a list of the roles that the BMMC cover.

http://www.marshals.co.uk/resources/52972829732.pdf - pretty much all of it will help explain the different roles available.

There are jobs in assembly areas / start line that that are very involved but not as direct "on the bank" from a race incident point of view (with the exception of issues at starts, in pitlane etc.)

They give a high degree of contact with drivers / teams but involve less incident handling.
Note : they do / may involve incident handling re: start line incidents / pit lane etc. just (IMHO) less frequently.

There are also jobs helping timekeepers, being runners for clerks etc. in Race Control ; though not my area of expertise.

Suggest you come to a traning / experience day (in the new year now) and this will help get you out of Catch 22

Hope this helps

The specialist grades need more people come join us. You can do pits, startline, paddock, assembly, race comms or several of those combined.

Im sure someone will pick on something else that ive forgotten

I'm planning on doing a lot more of that lot, next year - especially pits & startline. Am I right to assume that the way to get involved is simply to say so at volunteering time?

Yep, just put down for pits, start or both.

Since my knee injury I haven't spent much time as much time marshalling, so I have become increasingly involved with timekeeping at events. As Brendan has already pointed out, it's one of the options available if you don't want to be out on the banks. It requires lots of concentration and attention to detail, but it's very interesting and enjoyable. Like marshalling, you would start timekeeping as a trainee and be asessed on various aspects of the role and the various duties involved.

If your friend is interested in going down this route, I suggest getting in touch with the MSA or the BMMC Grading Officer from your region - their contact details are on marshals.co.uk.

I've done all sorts of pits/startline/race admin/race control/comms type roles. If you're friend wants to contact me then she can and I'll talk her through some of them from a girlie point of view. If she wants to come along to an MSVR meeting next year she can have a chat to some of our guys and girls and get an idea of what's available and what she might want to do.

...although I should say that these days the option is often all of the things I've listed above, usually in the same day! The ability to multi task is pretty key!

I was in the pits at silverstone for the Touring cars, having never worked in the pits i was unsure of what to expect. But i was very happy come the end of the day!! A great day and a very interesting way to see a race from a diffrent view. I would advise anybody to have at least one day in the pit lane and see for them selfs what they can get out of the experiance.

So that's why we have so many "ladies" in Assembly/Pits/Startline. Thank God we mere males are still required to assist the Grid Girls

LOL, I believe the bad news is that they are going to alter the "grid girls' gate" so your assistance may not be required in the future! That is unless they manage to walk down the bus stop and need helping over the wall!
