Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009

Congratulations BARC!

The selection process begins, good luck to all who apply. Could be a nice warm end to the season for about 300 people by the sound of it.

I reckon the only place where 300 marshals will be able to stay is in the brand new hotels within the circuit itself. Should be a great trip for anyone he manages to get selected..

Hmmm looks awfully tempting!

No under 18's and away for a week - does that mean loads of us retired folk will find it easier to escape than those needing to beat their bosses up to get some holiday?

I'm very tempted, but await some input from those of you who have done similar before - there have to be some downsides to balance the apparent high spots ....
7 hour flight
what sort of temperatures?
are news stories about no alcohol / headache tablets etc real?

can those of you who put up with me on post for a day cope with me for a whole week

Have had an invitation to apply for selection like (I guess) many of us.
Never been sucessful with the BARC yet for foreign events (Except Anglesey!) but will be hoping for third-time lucky.

Good luck to everyone else who may be applying!

Dont forget the 30,000 workers accomodation facilities on site that can be freed up. The contract only calls for 2000 rooms to be ready by the grand prix, the rest to come later.

Mind you the canteen is OK and cheap.

Im definitely applying, it'd be a fantastic experience, so I've got to try!

I have thought about the temperatures already, quick bit of research on Wikipedia says average temperature in Oct/November is about 30! Phew!

Hard work no doubt but surely well worth it?

Anyone know how long we're likely to be kept in suspense after the closing date?

Average max temps will be about 30 in November, although temps will drop a lot lower through the evening. I think that the peak max would be 35+. It could rain...

Alcohol is readily available at hotels (and my house, but not for 300)..

Not seen or heard about any painkiller issues.. but you can't have any israeli passport stamps and need to be careful about what you bring in generally. British citizens don't need a visa prior to travelling. There's plenty of advice on the web.

ABU DHABI

Having lived and worked in Abu Dhabi for 3 years and still having friends over there can confirm......

Yes you can drink, its not a dry country, but the bars are only in the hotels and alcohol isnt cheap!!

Dont get caught drunk in the street or get into a taxi drunk, taxi drivers will just take you straight to the police station and hand you in.

Temprature wise at this time of the year it averages about 80-95 degrees but its the humidity which does for you!! you really do need to drink 20 litres of water a day minimum.

That aside its very westernized and a modern city on a small island, me is going to apply to go and if I dont get chosen may well just make my own way over there!!!

20!, perhaps if you take into account a pint of black coffee in the morning and a few social beers in the evening I could get close to 10 litres

At the track 5 litres maybe closer to the mark (10 to 12*500ml bottles sounds about right). I did the GP meeting in April 08 when the temperature was around the 30 centigrade mark too,(but not for too long, the early mornings were quite chilly).
It's not too bad if you remember to move a little bit more slowly, use the shade provided, drink more,(lots of water supplied on post), and breath through your nose. Honest, being a mouthbreather , talking too much & smoking dries you out quicker.

It's the lack of time to acclimatise that can be hard on some.

It could be worth it just for the overalls.

Look a bit flash at the next UK meeting that you do.

Circuit boy has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Is it only BARC members who will be invited, or others as well?

Sorry Jacko, you won't get to keep the overalls, they'll go into store for next year. BARC have sent forms out to 1400 marshals known to them, so it's not just BARC members.
