VW to enter F1?

From www.autorace.com

Premature appointment of new VW chairman might hasten announcement

It was reported prior to the Belgian GP that Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piech has resisted calls by the company to enter the F1 arena, but sources have indicated that an announcement of their intentions might be forthcoming once Piech retires from the board in November.

It was furthermore reported that the company is at present working on an F1 prototype and that Piech's successor is Bernd Pischetsrieder, although no official confirmation was given at the time.

Reports this week stated that Volkswagen is expected to prematurely confirm Pischetsrieder's appointment on Friday, which in turn might hasten Volkswagen's announcement of their F1 interest.

Another reputable manufacturer enters F1! What would they badge it? Porsche, Audi, or VW?

We've discussed this one a lot lately. Porsche, is not a VW susidiary, but independant, (though marketed in the US with Audi) so that option is unlikely (though Porsche themselves are rumoured to be coming back).

Audi perhaps makes the most sense as a direct Global competitor to BMW and Mercedes. And shades of the great Auto Union GP cars of the '30's would make a great marketting campaign.

Bugatti, has been suggested as VW is relaunching the marque and they have a great racing tradition, (would also make sense as Prost is the rumoured team to be bought out and Bugatti's traditional Alsation home of Molsheim is in the German speaking part of France.)

Rule out Skoda and SEAT. VW itself might be a possibility, but less likely that Bugatti, Lamboghini or Audi.

No offence taken EERO By the way, I didn't know that Porsche is separate company from VW! You learn something new every day on this board!

Erm...Bugatti would really be a name in F1..Volkswagen is not really a sportive sounding name, especially if you know the german meaning...lol. Lamborghini would be a name though...

Best regards,

Julian

This would mean having to buy out one of the existing teams... Prost perhaps??? Would Diniz be able to produce enough dosh against a Works team?

Which is why Bugatti makes so much sense as conjecture. Its the French/German thing.

(and it has nothing to do with 1872, 1918, 1940 or 1945.

My money is on Audi...

...but wouldn't you just love it if it were Skoda!?

And why not? Sounds ridiculous now but remember Lamborghini were farm tractor manufacturers prior to the release of the Miura and it must have sounded ridiculous to think you could buy a supercar from an agricultural hardware manufacturer!!!!

Well said Jean,

I had some great times as a boy in a Beetle converted into a buggy for thrashing thru the bush and in a sand mine. Excellent though they do tend to roll at 60 miles an hour when you decide to try a hanbrake turn.

Its not a Beetle though... Its a vw jetta vr6 (bora v6 to you euro guys). My best friend had a super beetle back in the mid 80's and we had a blast in it! That, and my Aunt's (in Italy) old Fiat 500 are two of the most fun cars I've ever driven.
