The McLaren Group and ALMS Thread (merged)
Here is a link how Mclaren bought back controling percetige of shares from Mercedes, there is an interesting bit at the end I'll post it here
"In the longer-term future we will hopefully have a successful, mature, developed automotive company with a range of products and we may then choose to invest back in racing." Whitmarsh also revealed that McLaren has consulted its Maranello-located competitors with regards to cooperating with one another, having talked with Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo last week. "Our message there was, 'We want to race with you,'" Martin explained. "'Where are you going to go? Why don't we go together?" PLZ PLZ PLZ let it be LMP1 2011-12 Imagine, Ferrari, Porsche, Mclaren, Peugeut, Aston, Audi.............. if this happens I will officiali stop doing anything else and watch racing 24h a day |

McLaren have also said they are not planning to have their own team, but will support customers.

McLaren vs Ferrari vs Porsche vs Corvette vs BMW would be good enough I wouldn't need LMP. Throw in Audi and Toyota and it could be truly epic...

Dull Thud does have an LM24 race win in his history, even if the ACO later declared the XJ220 illegal.
As to Ferrari and McLaren infighting? "Is nothing personal, is only business"! |

It remains to be seen how sustainable SRO's GT1 World championship is. Take away the ageing+technically illegal Maserati's and Corvettes and things don't look so healthy. However regardless of which series, a MP4-12C vs 458 Italia battle is something to savour! |

Yes, all those manufacturers would be great in Sportscar. However it hasn't happened yet. Would the (mainstream) TV companies go giddy for it. Maybe as much as they did in the late '80s or late '90s when there were as many manufacturers. Oh. Not with endurance they won't. Anyway, I don't care as long as it is on some telly. Back to the main topic. Lets hope they allow the McLaren and teams take up the challenge. It looks a lovely car. |

I dont suppose that would stop them running a customer programme in GT if there were sufficient customers.

I'm not reading very much into that. Another part of the group is clearly looking at a GT programme (no surprise there), whether that's as a customer programme or a factory programme, but there's not the slightest hint that they are interested in a prototype programme and an attempt at the overall. That's my interpretation, anyway.

The road car arm adds a new dimension for Mclaren as it's a long term program with muliple product lines.
A GTE program seems a given with the MP4 but longer term a P1 prgram may become an option particularly if P1/F1 technology can be shared. |

IMO if Ron wants to sell cars in a market dominated by Porsche and Ferrari he will have to be seen to have a consistently competitive product. With BMW and Audi around as well he needs to show the car is up to the standard of the McLaren name so a GT programme is most likely.
A one off appearance won't do it, what happened to the Panoz after their lucky win in GT2 at Le Mans? |
