USAC
I saw a midget race the other night- and i can't wait to see chili bowl on TV if it airs...
Does any one realize how good USAC racing is at all levels? It is a huuge organization, but is it sort of glazed over, considring it feeds nascar and not indy anymore... The history here is so rich- why does it not get better coverage? |

Ever seen a World of Outlaws Race? Wild. Except for the Nashville Ntls. they normally are not covered, at least in Canada. Usually too many delays for live TV & there is that 1000lb gorilla called NASCAR.

One of the highlights of my life was watching Steve Kinser come to Australia to race a sprint car and from the back of the field he not only won the race but lapped every single car in the event (and the other drivers were no slouches Brooke Tatnell , Max Dumnesy , Skip Jackson and the like)
and he is returning to Oz again this year |

WoO races everywhere, more often than NASCAR. You can't miss them, and they are probably close to you some rural place!

I believe the Outlaws will be at the track near Brighton On. I cannot recall the name right now. It is probably listed on their website.

It is the sprints I want to see live. TV just isn't the same. We used to travel on business to Lancaster Pa. once or twice a year and still never made it to a race. The WOO were never there when we were but the Pa. Posse drivers are very good and often can beat the Outlaws. About the only ones who can and several of them have travelled with the WOO in past years.

well simply put USAC is part of Grass roots racing and the IRL's original vision (ok so it seems to have changed now) was to tap into this huge talent pool of Grass roots racing and bring drivers on from sprint cars and other forms of speedway racing into the Indycar series.
while there still maybe a few of these guys that get through to the top , sadly it isnt much the case anymore. I am happy to discuss USAC events in here as there really isnt another forum for it to be discussed on and because of what was a close tie in between Indycars and USAC events I dont see a huge problem is talking about it here. |

Stevie Smith started out in the Pittsburgh area, Leighton.
Thank you for allowing this thread to stay open marcus! Just to add to why it should be here is that for many years the dirt-tracks were THE source of Indy-bound talent here. What we like/don't like about it and why it is no longer the case can be discussed logically here. Two of our greatest drivers ever came up this way (Mario and AJ Foyt) and a third who was no slouch came from off-road: Rick Mears. |

Silver Crown used to run a schedule dominated by mile tracks (both dirt and asphalt). Race distances were 50 to 100 miles. I know they ran Gateway in Illinois once, which is 1.25 miles. They may have run Homestead, which is 1.5 miles, or someplace similar.
I know nothing about today's Silver Crown series, which is an abomination of what it used to be. |

The longest, fast sprint car race ever, was an IMCA 300 miler at Atlanta Speedway in the early sixties.
They were going to do it again the next year but another sanctioning body offered more money for their race and it never happened again. |

"The IMCA Peach Blossom 200 (miles) was held on October 11, 1964, and was promoted by American Raceways, Inc. Greg Weld was not the winner, but did win the pole at a tour of 157.434 MPH; the fastest IMCA sprint lap in history. It's entirely possible that this was the fastest average speed ever turned for a lap by anything classified as a sprint car, anywhere. Leo Caldwell won in a Ford-powered upright. Other top finishers: 2nd - Clare Lawicki 3rd - Curly Boyd 4th - Sam Sessions 5th - Red Amick 6th - John Logan Average Speed - 124.998 MPH (probably also a record for a long sprint car race). Caldwell won $4,125 of a total purse of $25,000; 28 cars started the race. Six of the year's 13 USAC National Championship races paid a lower purse." |

Fastest lap I've heard of from a short track style car would be Troy Regeir's lap at the Pikes Peak one mile oval. He set a 22.586 with a 159.36 mph average. The car was a Hyder Hawk supermodified with a 430 ci small block. That is called a "world record" but for what I don't know.
Car can be found here: http://www.biswellmotorsports.com/2002.htm Last edited by jhansen; 18 Jan 2007 at 00:52. |

Quick question: Are you talking about what is now Atlanta Motor Speedway, or the old Lakewood Speedway dirt mile that held races until the 1970s?
