sponsoship????
guys, this has been bugging me since i noticed it watching the bsb at mallory and further puzzled me at oulton!
why do all the marshalls on the bsb at each circuit get sponsored by black horse? is this a new thing, what do they get and does this take place with any other series? |

IIRC the marshals that marshal BSB are members of RaceSafe and that the overalls are supplied by RaceSafe. So I assume it's part of their contract.

yep, magnet on, is right all BSB marshalls are supplied with coveralls, these are issued free to all racesafe marshalls and the last few meetings have been handing out waterproof jackets as well. all saves a tidy sum at the end the day, racesafe wont let us wear any other coveralls, except those supplied and i guess when sponsorship changes so will the coveralls jackets all with different logos. we are also supplied a bag of food every day every meeting by hungry-jacks, all advertising i suppose but when its free it really does help every ones dressed the same and looks professional
(i hate getting up early and making sandwiches when you have a 2 hour drive ahead of you, so this is a big bonus for us and makes you feel appreciated) |

As for the looking professional gwar, a few years ago the RAC provided overalls for all the marshals at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone which did look good on the telly - no scruffy over-washed probans covered in scribble (yes, that was my old ones!). Unfortunately, the deal never went any further and we didn't get waterproofs, which meant that when it rained, all manner of wet weather gear went on over the nice "corporate image" overalls and totally ruined the effect! |

That was when the RAC had the sponsorship deal for the BGP which ran for three years.
For car racing this would be a much harder rule to implement. Mainly because there are so many organising clubs, each with their own Marshals Club and corporate identity. If we all operated under the banner of say the BMMC then it would be a different matter. |

StePhen, it doesn't have to be so complicated. How about (say) MSV providing (say) purple overalls to all marshals at MSV tracks? I'm sure someone like E sure could save us all a tidy sum!
It's OK, I'll come back to reality soon! |

Why should anyone provide overalls for us anyway? Marshalling is our chosen hobby and we should expect to fund it as necessary.
I also like mountain biking, but I don't expect someone else to buy my bike/lid/jacket etc for me. Same for packed lunches etc........If I go cycling for the day, I make my own packed lunch. same when I marshal. Rosie |

I think the point is that at certain levels of motorsport there is a silly amount of money being spent and that perhaps it would be good if some of the sponsorship was spread around to the people that provide the safety at these events.
I'm happy enough to pay for my ovies and my lunch but if someone wants to throw a free lunch or a free set of ovies my way then I'm not going to say no! |

Fair comment MagnetON, and I completely agree.
Wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth etc etc.... I just didn't think it should be expected and I certainly don't need freebies to feel appreciated. A 'thank you' at the end of the day is good enough for me. Rosie |

Can some one let me know how many marshals work at Oulton Park?
I may be intersted in supplying branded overals if the numbers were right. why sponsor a car that you see every 2 mins when you see a marshal all day. Be intersted to find out? |

Best to PM BRSCCNW (Alistair Garrett) who should be able to give you an idea, but it depends on the event and the circuit config being used...

Sorry, I don't want to sound unappreciative but I don't want to be sponsored!

Just playing devils advocate for a change, does that mean that if the marshals were sponsored for the day, there would be more money being brought into the sport we all love so much, you know the one that is so desperate to make it cheaper for people to enter and to come watch etc etc....
If someone asked you to wear sponsored overalls for the day you would say no???? as long as they fit and are proban i say bring it on, i wouldn't want to be paid for what i do but if we can directly help to the bottom line of the sport by wearing sponsorship count me in. |

Well a new set of probans from the BMMC costs us about 40 quid, so for an average Oulton meeting you'd probably be looking at 80-100 marshals totalling approx £4k. To be honest i think it'd be a waste to do that for one or two meetings, as the overalls last a long time.
Don't know if anyone has noticed, but a lot of overalls are already sponsored by Remguard.....! |

yes they are supplied, you tell them the size, they give you the nearest they have, and you sign them out, sign them back in at the end of the weekend.

All marshals on the main start/finish straight are asked (?) to wear Goodwoods' own white overalls to complete the 50's/60's atmosphere. I did this willingly, only I had to take a run-up to get into them!

Also at every grandprix across the world all marshalls wear tabards which looks tidy and hides any advertising that bernie dosnt want, must admit the Rac coveralls did look good at the time and lasted quite well, but i,ve eaten a few pies since then and stuggle to fit in nowadays. i remember fosters had a dabble at supplying marshalls with hats at a few GP,s .
Yes its a hobby and we all love it, any help on the finnancial side is allways a help..... perhaps BP or SHELL might sponsor us one day and help pay our fuel bills... after all thay only make a small profit dont thay... |

I heard a rumour that's why Silverstone marshals wore black. There was a sponsorship deal with Shell that fell through. We had a deal with a local transport company in Dartford thanks to the sizeable efforts Micheal Drake, including nomex overalls for fire marshals. I didn't see anyone refuse them on moral grounds!

Those bloomin' tabards. Are they now fire resistant? They weren't a few years ago - we tried! They flap around, the fastenings break and they could get caught while dealing with an incident. If it rains, you're supposed to put them outside your waterproofs (with the resultant delay) and then when it stops you've got a wet tabard to put over your probans. Hate 'em.

I take a sewing kit and re-sew the elastic before I wear them, then they don't break!

Whilst I appreciate that sponsorship reduces the cost of buying a pair of probans, the reduction in cost is very small in comparison to all the other expenses, like petrol. Personally I'd rather pay the little extra and not have "Sponsored by McRae Kipper Fillets" all over the back.
Then again, we all like covering them with racing orientated badges, so I would consider buying probans that are sponsored by obvious and well known motor racing corporations. Mind you, I'd rather turn up starkers than have "Sponsored by Bernie Ecclestone" on the back. |
