Will De Ferran retire ???
speculation around would be to suggest that Gil De ferran might retire from racing and enjoy a nice quite life with his family.
sounds all rather nice to me but is Gil ready to retire? is it the fact he is not that keen on the ovals and prefers road courses on which he grew up on ? or has he simply had enough and earnt enough money to live comfotably for the remainder of his years? do you think he will retire or will he be back next year at Penske ??? |

Would he have any option of leaving Penske to return to CART? Reading between the lines, I think that might be what he wants to do, he knows full well that CART is much safer. Roger says he wouldn't stand in Helio's way if he got an F1 chance, would that also apply to CART?

Gil had the option of staying in CART for this year anyway, Roger said that if either of them didn't want to race IRL, they were free to go.
I think rumours of his retirement are just coming from the fact he had a bad accident (remember Schumacher after Silverstone in '99) and people want to see him back at CART. He possibly would prefer CART, but he know's he is with a great team in Penske. When he was interviewed in Indy Racing 2day prior to Texas, he said he wanted to come back for next year, so we'll see what happens. It would be great for the series if he stayed. He'll be back. I'm sure of it. IRL next year, then we'll see what happens. Hopefully back to CART.

The other rumour (on the Sam Hornish Jr thread) is of Pennezoil wanting to take Panther to CART, and arranging to swap Sam for Gil, which would mean De Ferran and Wheldon in Panther in CART, and Helio and Sam in IRL in Penske colours. That sounds like the best combination to me, but its hard to tell with these things, we're all sort of repeating the same rumours across different forums because so many teams and drivers are unclear as to which series they'll do, and who will drive for which parts of their operations for the multi-series teams like Ganassi and the Toyota engine people, who seem looking to switch Dixon to IRl and Da Matta to F1.

Well...I hope that happens it would be great to have Gil back in Cart.
Still, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Gil was considering retiring. There were rumours about it before he signed with Penske back in 1999. There were also rumours he was interested in retiring to another position in racing that wasn't behind the wheel. |

It's a crime that the man never got a shot at F1.
There were rumours that he was perhaps close to a Ligier drive in 96. The closest he got was those Footwork test drives in 93. |

Jackie Stewart was wooing Gil big-time to drive for his upstart StewartGP team. Gil refused, citing his love of the competition in CART.
