Mallory Park - Closed Season Work
I understand that Mallory is having a bit of a facelift during the winter months.
Does anyone know what? |

The old pits certainly looked a bit overcrowded for the bikes last weekend, hope they don't go using the silly chicane for too many car mtgs.

I've since been told that the entire race control building and the hospitality suites are been bulldozed as well!

Observer you have been speaking to the same people as me! My understanding is that they are going to build a new pits/race control complex with around 25 garages (ooh lots of room to park!!). As long as they remember NOT to put race control where it is at the moment (ie in direct line of fire!) things should be OK. However, I would like to see some plans/drawings of what it's all going to look like.
In a perfect world it would have been nice if some of the senior officials of the clubs who go to Mallory regularly could have been consulted and asked for their opinion. Still, the fact its getting done should be enough. |

It'll be sad in a way to lose what has now become a familiar sight at Mallory, but I will welcome the changes.
I hope that the actual startline will move forwards a little too. A couple of weeks ago whilst doing the Chequered flag stuff, it was quite awkward with the debris fencing in the way -particularly as I'm left handed! Will it all be completed by the beginning of the 2004 season, or will the new season start later like they did at Oulton this year? |

"hospitality suites"
whereas I acknowledge the desperate need for a facelift I hope they don't do too much to lose the character... a bit of retro styling rather than all glass and polished steel maybe? |

It's interesting Observer talked of the need to move the startline forward. We (BARC Renault) asked to have a 1 x 1 grid there a couple of years ago and were told that we couldn't because that would put the back of the grid part way up the hill at Devils Elbow. I then asked why the startline couldn't be nearer to Gerards and was told that it was as near as it was allowed to be to the first corner. It all sounds like rubbish to me, the startline at Cadwell and Lydden is closer to the first corner than at Mallory. After all that background waffle, I agree, move the startline towards Gerards by enough distance to allow
1 x 1 grids. |

The pit exit lane needs some thought, you've got to be quite careful coming out if a gaggle of cars are heading towards Gerards at the same time. But they can't move it much further round, cos there's a lake in the way!

Bob,
I'd rather walk from the startline to Gerrards at Mallory, than from the startline to Coppice at Cadwell |

You could be right Peter, I've never actually driven at Cadwell, so it has always been a visual thing from behind the pit wall. It must be closer to the first corner at Lydden than Mallory. What about Thruxton, or doesn't Allard count as its flat?

wouldnt it be nice if they could put the med centre outfield so access can be gained to hospital without stopping a race.

25 pit garages(!) Starting where and ending where? Or are they ultra narrow ones? If they are Silverstone spec garages I guess the lake would need to be concreted over and Pit Exit would be on the back straight.
If the pit entry moves up towards the startline then you could get some interesting moments if someone gets Devils Elbow wrong. I haven't been to Mallory for a few years. Have they finished tarmacing the paddock yet? ;-) |

I understand they are gonna put the Pits the otherside of the track with the exit at Edwina's, and a Road bridge in to the Paddock, should be fun..........

Well now, I was at Mallory yesterday and was fortunate enough to see the architect's drawings for the upgrading work (as well as the mess they are currently making of the paddock).
All there is at the moment is an architect's drawing of a very futuristic looking building which could go anywhere (including Donington!) It looks as though there will be several garages, hospitality units, race control and commentators rooms all under one roof, starting roughly where the hospitality suites are at the moment. Judging from the holes in the paddock I think they are moving everything back a bit as well. |

ooooooh is this available anywhere for public perusal?
I was thinking it looked like being moved way back looking at the holes...which would suggest a pit lane entrance pretty much as soon as you exit Devil's Elbow? |

Don't know about public perusal - I was being nosy in the commentator's room when I saw it!
Don't think I'd be happy about having the pit lane entrance on the exit from the Elbow - that's just about where the gravel trap is now and we all know how popular that can be from time to time! I'm more concerned about where the pit lane exit is going to be. If its in the same place or a bit further back towards the bridge I'll be happy, as long as they give me some nice modern lights (red, green, yellow, blue) to play with as well. |
