We have it rebuilt several times over the past year and it has never really worked properly. I would buy a new one if it was available. I am in the process of converting a 2.5 kw starter of a high compresion big block chev but i was just inquiring to see if anyone else had had a similar problem with a reynard or wether its just us....
cheers |

Just curious, why would the chassis be the cause of the starter motor problem? If the starter doesnt throw the cogs up to the flywheel (I assume it still works like this is formula cars) then the starter itself sounds ordinary as opposed to the fitment to a Reynard chassis.
Surely these can be sourced from Europe? These engines are still run there, indeed there are a few other Fiats being run here, who may have spares |

IN the book the Reynard story, the problm of starters is adressed. I guess the chassis is part of the problem due to the way the starters connect to the flywheel. some chassis have the setup whjere there is a geqr uin constant mesh with the flywheel but these cars tend to break output shafts.
I just wish I didn't have to keep pulling out the starter and more importantly spend money on it...... |

Try a company called Holger christianson (cargo) they are based in Nottingham UK and are a massive supply of starter's and alternator's for all kinds of things.

If the reynard design had a s/motor in constant mesh it must of had a clutch or niddle clutch to bring it out of drive otherwise the motor would overspeed and burnout. Last edited by terje; 12 Feb 2004 at 16:00. |

What happens is the starter is on the inlet side and throws out onto the flyhwheel from the engine side. The starter just doesn't seem to have enough grunt and its completely stuffed now anyway. Its a 81t flywheel by the way and i really want another one!!!!

Have you checked the gear lash between the starter pinion and the flex plate (flywheel gear)? I have set the lash on BBC Chevys before and just a small shim under the starter mount makes a huge difference in the power required and the life of the components.
