ITV to get the Digital service ?
Bernie's got a good idea to get the viewing figures up for F1 races on terestrial tv.....
from Autosport.com The plan, if approved by F1's teams, would allow terrestrial channels, such as Britain's ITV, access to the blanket coverage, extra on-board footage and behind-the-scenes interviews that until now has been reserved exclusively for the sport's pay-per-view digital footage. |

The plan, if approved by F1's teams, is to sack Jim, stop Tony touching guests and explain to James what motor racing is (or gag him).

There are some things that Digtial still offers. More coverage (practice, Porsche, etc...). And the other screen options. No ads. The digital coverage will still be a lot better, because there are things a terestrial channel just can't do.
But you are right it won't help digital. |

I agree.....but , it may make digital even cheaper for us people that would still want to watch it.
I would still buy digital , as like Adam says is still has all live practice , and every session including support races also . But its good news for all the people who are stuck with ITV. At least this way , they will get to see some decent coverage for free. Last edited by Sato san; 19 Sep 2002 at 19:47. |

I think this might make some people (like myself) who've decided not to get up or stay up for F1 races reconsider. F1, in its current state is about as interesting as watching paint dry. I have to admit some Cart races this year havne't been much better, but they have always been much more interesting because of pit-radios, interviews with the teams and officials during the race, and overall much better coverage. Besides, it;s not worth having to pay money to watch cars NOT race each other.

the differance is if you do pay money you CAN actually watch cars race. There's been some damn fine racing down the field this year.

Thats right , the mid field battles this year have been great , some of these races are only like watching paint dry because of the poor coverage that gets showed

I'd love to get the digital feed..we've gotten a taste of what its like here in Canada though ABC - and its pretty good..certainly miles ahead of ITV's regular coverage.
I'd certainly pay for it...provided its reasonable... |

I hope it comes true, free-to-air F1 has made for one of the most boring spectacles in years in 2002, utterly dull.

Maybe we will all get a better deal out of this.......the people who want to watch free to air F1 will get better coverage with the digital feed....but the people ( like me ) who love the chioce of what battles to watch through the interactive options may get the service for a cheaper price now that some of the digital service is going out on ITV for free.

I hope this happens. The casual viewers and the kids who make up F1's future fanbase will be seeing the ITV coverage, and currently get an impression of F1 as a dull, processional sport with no characters, which is far from the truth. Better terrestrial coverage with some better on-board shots and interviews will ensure a better spectacle.
And I'm not sure digital will lose out- if more people see how good the racing is, that's mroe F1 fans, and the more enthusiastic / wealthier of those will buy Digital+, and I'm sure none of the existing buyers will stop using it because it still offers total control over what you're seeing. And no James Allen. |

This is great news, so long as they keep my favourite camera angle (from the inside of the Remuskurve in Austria).

1) Better ITV coverage = less people buying F1 digital +
2) reduction in the demand for F1 digital + = bye bye F1 digital plus... I suppose this is great news for the many, many fans who don't have access to a Digital + feed in their country, but after watching it for all of this season... PLEASE DONT TAKE IT AWAY FROM ME BERNIE! |

Bernie's very wise...classic business marketing strategy. he notices his sales are dropping in his cut-price service (terrestrial ratings) but his premium sales are constant (digital+). if he wants to get more premium sales, first he has to increase the cut-price fan base to create loyalty to the sport. he notices that the quality of the cut-price service is really quite bad and people don't like to watch it. so he'll introduce a "new and improved" version of the blanket coverage but still keep the premium service premium.
this should increase sales (ratings) of the cut-price service and then when people realise "ooh i could get more if i payed x amount a month/season, it's worth it if it's better than this good cut-price service" it's genius and beneficial to both him and the normal squibs that watch F1 on ITV1...at last he has seen sense. |
