Murphy's Bathurst record to be broken this week?
As a uni student with too much time (and not enough money) to spare, when I heard something interesting screeching about on Mount Panorama, I just had to have a look. Normally, loonies in HSV/WRX/XR8 etc are doing silly things, but this was a very special sound, from a very special car.
If I'm right, this could be the first time that late model F3 cars have been allowed on the circuit. The cars (two of them: one silver, one black) were at hand to film a commercial (!) for a Korean (!!) BANK (!!!) Anyway, I talked to one of their senior blokes and he said that once filming was completed, it would be up to the drivers as to whether they wanted to do full laps of the circuit. (while I was there they were only using Murray's, Pit Straight, Hell corner and Mountain Straight) Though I doubt it would be official, I'd love to see by how much faster around Mt Pan an F3 is over a V8. |

Would love to see them up n over the mountain top... but somehow I don't think they'd be allowed (and BOT - without setup time, I'd think they'd go slow through skyline and the dipper increasing lap times.)
As for official - must be set in an actual race (much like Mark Webber's laps at Calder Park in the CLK - great to know but not recognised.) |

Wet road on a sunny day. Were they using a water truck?
And are we going to see the "Low Won Dollar" 1000 next year in October? Who knows what Cochrane International is up to now!!! |

F3's aren't that much faster than V8s, and unless you had a top driver pushing pretty hard I doubt they you could be anywhere near a V8 like overall speed and especially not when cruising around for promotional purposes.

Lets see (stats are wonderful - especially when used in context) The only track in the country where F3 and V8's have raced where the difference is under 2 seconds is Sandown (F3's 1:09.4 - V8's 1:10.8) and Symmons Plains - where the V8's are 0.3 faster than F3's BUT F3's haven't been to Symmons since 2003 so hard to honestly compare them. Elsewhere (these are all listed lap records btw): Adelaide Parklands F3 - 1:19.5 V8 1:24 Barbagallo (F2's) 53.4 V8 55.9 Eastern Creek 1:49.5 1:31.7 Gold Coast 149.5 1:51.6 Mallala 1:04.6 1:08.1 Oran Park 1:04.1 1:08.0 Phillip Island 1:27.1 1:32.5 Queensland Raceway 1:06.1 1:11.0 Sandown 1:09.4 1:10.8 Symmons Plains 42.3 (2003) 52.01 (2005) Wakefield Park 5.6 1:00.0 Winton 1:17.4 (2003) 1:23.4 So yes I can agree with you that F3's aren't that much faster than V8's. F3's hold the outright track record at a number of circuits now - so, no - they aren't quick. |

Track was wet because the art director wanted a shiny surface.
Tyres were slick as they didn't bring wets. Driver/crew/me shat themselves when he aquaplaned and lost the car flat in 3rd or 4th gear... |
