Williams step up a gear
Williams has go back to a Seven speed gear box. To give them more flexibility in gear ratios.
However, what impressed me is that they have achieved this while keeping similar dimensions and weight. (they went for six last year to keep these figures down). This is in Autosport 9/1/03. Also I was wondering how many gears the others have? I am sure Ferrari is a seven speed box and I think McLaren is, but I am unsure about the others. P.S. Apologises for the rubbish pun! |

Pretty sure seven is usual, with very few exceptions... Renault had six, not sure what they are doing this year.

Ferrari, Renault, Sauber, Toyota, Jaguar, BAR, Jordan and McLaren all had a 7-speed gearbox on their 2003 cars.
Only Minardi had a 6-speed gearbox. Strange though, all the databases say that Williams had a 7-speed gearbox last year... Last edited by ASCII Man; 9 Jan 2004 at 12:38. |

Renault had a 6 speed at least until July of last year. I know they ran 6 speed box at the British GP this year. They made public there concerns about indy as they wouldn't have 7th as a really long gear for the straight.

I thought that Williams had seven last year, but They make a big deal of the change in Autosport (the panel on p27, for anyone who has a copy).

I heard that too, seven gearbox last year. Maybe they'll turn up with an eight gearbox, and surprise everyone.
With that nose, you can expect anything from them. |

I think the rules limit the number of gears to a maximum of seven

BMW have had a lot of involvement in this gearbox. So we are seeing more integration between the team and engine 'supplier' here. An interesting aside to the actual technical stuff. Head points out that another side effect is that more gears put less strain on the engine. It all effects the rest, doesn't it. |

Is this seven speed gearbox move a bid to improve engine life or is it to enhance top speed slightly?

Just to keep things sane.
Otherwise you'd have fully automatic gear boxes with seperate gears for each corner or something. Well, thats my take. Ps: love your sig. "Racing is life, everything else is just used to mark time passing" |
