And then there was only one

Unless Jacques, Mika, Prost or even Lauda get the Jordna drive, Michael Schumacher will be the only WDC driving next year.

So a few questions for people smarter than me (about 10,000 registered so far ), have we ever had no WDC competing (apart from the 1st season)?

When was the last time there was only 1 (apart from the second season)?

What about only 2?

In 1994, there were no World Champions in the field after Senna's death, except for Nigel Mansell's one-off in Australia. Prost and Piquet had retired, and Nigel was tinkering around in Indycars. That means that for 1995 and 1996, Michael Schumacher was the only World Champion in the field, so he shouldn't have any trouble adjusting.

Also, in 1981, the only World Champion in the field was Alan Jones. Scheckter, Hunt, and Lauda had all walked away from the sport (at least temporarily in Lauda's case), and Andretti and Fittipaldi were racing in the States.

Cheers Cougar! - Much brain bending and a little bit of research yeilds theese possibly incorrect answers.

Maybe 77?
Lauda
Andretti
Hunt
Fittipaldi

86?
Rosberg
Prost
Piquet
Lauda

99!
Hill
Jaques
Hakkinen
Schumacher

I didn't Check the 50s cos of Fangio, 60s because of Clark and people leaving the sport (Rindt) and the 90s was a frustrating game of "win and quit"

close years: late 80s, 75 and late 90s both with 3.

Doesn't it seem sad that drivers like Fisichella, Coultard, Barrichello, and Ralf all have secure seats in F1, despite having had race winning cars for many more seasons than Jacques, yet failing to chalk up as many wins as he (let alone a WDC) that it is Jacques who doesn't have a drive in F1??? Sad indeed.

If memory serves me right, after the death of Ayrton in 1994 there were only two GP winners competing, MS and Gerhard Berger.

Yeah, he'd won 3 as Prost's team-mate in '93.

It's not looking good for the sport to have only 1 WDC in the grid.
