2005 BTCC Wishlist: Drivers

Out of all the drivers looking for 2005 BTCC drives, who are you most keen to see get a chance?

Personally I hope Gavin Pyper finally gets a full season to prove himself, I felt that Stefan Hodgetts showed promise so I'd like him to continue, and I feel it'd be a shame if Bentwood doesn't get to continue.

Outside of guys who have already been there, I'd be keen to see what Paul Rivett can do in a touring car.

Considering only about two or three drivers are confirmed next year at all...there are an awful lot looking for a drive

That fact into account, I'll opt for Anthony Reid

However, in the seriousness and context of your actual question - I reckon Gareth Howell hasn't had his fair shout at a seat yet. Turkington didn't exactly complete outperform him in the Team Atomic Kitten days, and he's the one sitting in a works Vauxhall drive next year.

O'Neill's never fully convinced me, although he's clearly a good guy, and I'd like to see him get another go. The series would definitely be a lot poorer without Anthony Reid in a strong team (be it WSR, or MG or both - his contract is with MG, so if they run their cars elsewhere, he'll join that team), and Hazard is right about Gareth Howell, who's been pretty useful when given a chance thus far.

the young guns like howell, pyper and o neill, all as good as turkington on their day

i reckon hodgetts and huff are dead certs

Also i think Watson-Smith, Bennett and Morrison deserve drives

Gordon Shedden - you just have to look at his Production appearances a few years ago to see his potential.

It'd be criminal if Watson-Smith wasn't given another chance in the BTCC - this time in a competitive car - because he's one of those purely talented international names which I guess sorts of harks back to the Super Touring days.

I'd agree with pretty much every other name on here, except Bentwood - complaining about his luck is ok to a certain extent but you do make your own luck in racing.

The usual bunch, and Gavin Pyper... Very entertaining with his cross country style of driving! Gareth Howell as well.

And of course Anthony Reid!

I think he's far too cocky and thinks he's got a God-given right to be there. Amused that he failed in the SEATs twice.

Kelvin Burt hasn't had a fair crack at it. It would be good if he could find a proper ride again......

What has happened to Paul O'Neill?

Owy was unable to race last year, as he lost his license temporarily due to being diagnosed with diabetes. Now that the condition is under control, he is free to return.

SWS deserves a top ride. He dazzled me this year and surely can't go back to SA so soon. Kelvin Burt has already been mentioned and he should be racing imo. He would be a great asset to any team

The Driversthat I would like to see in a top running car, whether works or independant are the following. Our local Driver, Carl Breeze, proved his ability during the second half of last year and gave Collard a run for his money, though this year the cars were not as competitive. Paul O'Neill proved himself by winning despite being team mate to Muller & Thompson, and is capable of more. And if Matt Neal was in a car which was reliable and handled the ballast better, he would be in a stronger position to win the BTCC Drivers Championship. Optional extras would include, Phil Bennett, Tom Boardman, David Leslie, Tim Harvey and Alain Menu.

Morrison, Tom B and Gordon Sheddon i would love to see in the BTCC.

Possible Bielia comming back after a poor year in DTM or is he already confirmed at Audi in '05?

He's not in the DTM with Audi, but I believe he's still involved with the R8 sportscar in one of the sportscar championships.

The obvious choice, if he was returning to the BTCC would be SEAT, Audi would have no problem with him doing that I assume, and SEAT, realistically would need a 3 car team next year to challenge for the championship.

I remember being at Oulton Park in 1995, and being asked by a couple of Italians why I was cheering for 'the guy who was last' (H. Irvine, of course!)Then, after Hamish had retired from the second race, me and my dad tried to get a picture of his car as it was wheeled into his garage. He promply invited us into the garage to take our photo! An act of generousity that I've never forgotten. Top bloke!

Sorry, a bit there, my wishlist of drivers for next year includes Shaun Watson Smith, Gareth Howell, John Hughes (who I thought improved throughout 2004) and Paul O Neill (who provided me with another great Oulton moment when he won there in 2002!)
