Rouse Supercars
Today's MN has a story about Andy Rouse's Supercars formula being resurected as part of the F3/GT package next year. The original plan was for the series to start in 2001 at the same time as the new BTCC regs. Octagon took control of the series, posponed it for 12 months then quietly swept it under the carpet. It's now been taken on by someone else.
For those who don't remember it the idea was for a spec chassis with a 550bhp GM-Lotus V8 engine, RWD, and saloon bodywork. The original prototype was based around a Peugeot 406 but it could also accomodate Mondeo, Accord, BMW, Mercedes, Vectra, etc bodywork. Vaguely similar to Germany's V8 Star series with more conventional bodywork. Will it work? Do we need another saloon series? |

The people behind the project have are all very succesfull and have a proven track record, remember that Andy Rouse was the key person in designing the original regulations for the 2.0litre "supertouring" regulations, as well as been probably the greatest touring car driver ever.
The current btcc formula does have many faults and has not really captures the public, the new supercar formula, with high power rear wheel drive & probably oversteering cars, will probably be more attractive to watch and as part of the F3-GT package could be an exciting part of a well presented, balanced and very entertaining package of racing. |

With a few modifications these are what the BTCC should have become. A spaceframe chassis fitted with panels from road cars (modified to fit where necessary - but not too much), spoilers allowed but with minimum effect, and powered by a 2.5 litre V6 which most of the manufacturers involved in the BTCC at the time had somewhere in their range. This may sound like Eurocars, but look what racing they produced in their time.

Too many series, not enough entrants - do we need more? Probably not.

Yeah if was to succeed, I think it will probably do the BTCC more harm than good.
I heard there was to be a new Production Car Championship set up this year. Anyone heard anything about this?? |

Please not another touring car (can I still say that?) or should I say silhouette racing series. So now we have DTM, V8 Star, South African, Belgian Procar, Nascar, what else???--silhouette racing series???

BRSCC are running the Production Saloon Championship. That's more of a Group N style Production and a BTCC 'Production', aimed at lower budget club racers. It starts at Brands over the Easter weekend.

Re: Rouse Supercars
TB - Surely they don't want to be subjected to them.
Supercars - Spaceframe chassis, spec engines, only difference being the bodywork.........that certainly ain't a Touring Car. |
