917 Mc Queen drove in 1970
I know there's here a lot of real fans of Le Mans. So I'd like to post this quite precise question, I have not the answer of...
In the last MotorKlassik (03/2002), they found out THE 917 one (shape 024) that McQuenn drove Mc Queen at the end of Le Mans - the movie. No concrete informations but : - Jo Siffert bought it (in the middle of other cars) to rent them (trumendously expensive) to Solar Productions. That car was sold again to a passionate french man (no name is given) after the movie was done, and the car ran until the end of 1972. For 30 years, that car was in a backyard, not far away from Paris... Do someone has some informations about the becomming of this car ? |

I'm sure there was an auction in USA a year or so ago that sold Steve McQueen's 917 for nearly 1,000,000 (£ or $ I can't remember).
However it could be possible that more than one 917 was associated with him. I have the book, "French kiss With Death" which is all about Steve, the race and the film. I'll have a look in that later... |

There is the Gulf 917 that the Porsche owners club (or soemthing similar) display a lot. It's been at the last few Silverstone (COYS) Historic festivals. That's the one with the plaque that says
Steve McQueen Pedro Rodriguez David Piper Hard driving men, all. However I don't know who owns it. Although it gives me a lot of pleasure everytime I see it. Sorry about this I keep contributing teasers rather than facts. |

It was Richard Attwoods 917 (917-022)that was sold last year in the USA, this car was painted to recreate his 1970 winning livery. (you can see the camera brackets still on the car).
Steve McQueen would have been sure to have driven this car. You can see pictures of it on the Gunnar racing web site in the USA where it is under going a complete overhaul. www.gunnarracing.com this is a good site with some intresting cars for sale........now where is that lottery ticket Last edited by Nordic; 15 Feb 2002 at 14:23. |
