The demonstration 'race' for Eurocar V8s at Brands Hatch back in the 90s.
Unfortunately they worked out that perhaps they made too much noise and were silenced before the series proper started. |

Well with a name like mine its little wonder that NASCAR is music to my ears... Not so much at full chat as nice as that sounds its the slowing into the turns when you can hear a hint of overrun and the transmission working away.. The SCSA at Rockingham was great for that too.
F1, Ferrari's, Group C Jaguars .. yeah all pretty good but in terms of ultimate noise, fury, volume and pitch nothing I have heard is near the Toyota powered Champcars when they were at Rockingham .. wow they were ear shattering!! |

The sound in between the five-second board being shown and the lights going out on a full grid of Formula Libres... when the revs are up, there's no better sound!! A Metro 6R4 is right up there too, as is the wail of the Ferrari V12 as you already mentioned.

I know it is not a race machine as such (rallycar), but for me it is the sound of the Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car.

How about the old V12 in the Ferrari F1 machines. You knew it was coming long before you saw it.

The Panoz that raced at Le Mans around 1997 (check Perry McCarthey's book for details). In those days we camped on the golf course itself (in the semi rough) - when trying to sleep all other car noises "wafted past", but the Panoz seemed to be driving through the pillow. WONDERFUL!

I'll go for 2. The Matra V12 at Brands Hatch GP on its own during practice in the late 70's. You could hear it all round the circuit.
Nick Heidfeld's Maclaren taking the hill record at Goodwood in 1999. I was at the start and you could hear it all the way to the finish. |
