GPL Getting Started

Hi, I've owned GPL for about 7 years now, but have never actually got round to playing it for various reasons. I know have an XP laptop and the loan of a GT Force wheel for a while (does this work on a PC?), so how do I get started? Ta in anticipation.

I acquired a copy of GP Legends years ago, tried it a couple of times on the keyboard and gave up. Haven't touched it since.

I recently purchased a Logitech Pro FF wheel & pedal set to play GT4 on the PS2. Can I use this wheel & pedal set on my PC?

The Logitech DriveForcePro (aka DFP aka the PS2 GT4 wheel) will happily run on a PC with a bit of grunt (like a P4 or better.) The latest Logi wheel (the GTsomething) has been designed to run both PC and PS2. Don't know about the other PS2 based USB wheels, except (not helpful here) the MOMO PC wheel doesnt work on the PS2. Plug em in and see.

If you have one of the original copies of the game, make sure you get it patched to v1.2.0.1. The easiest and best is the "all-in-one" patch, which consolidates things like force feedback and support for newer graphics cards (ie. non 3dfx). Its available from a few places IIRC. That will get you up and running. If you've got one of the re-releases (Sold-Out Software) the patch is included.

I did a quick google and the Wikipedia page looks quite useful so have a good read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Legends

With the patch installed GPL supports force feedback and all that so as long as you have the wheel installed on the PC correctly you should have no problems at all.

It might also be useful to add the following to your core.ini file.

Code:
[communications]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
net_mdm_client_send_every = 3
net_mdm_client_send_size = 84
net_mdm_server_send_every = 3
net_mdm_server_send_size = 384 ; show 19 cars

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 1 ; Enable low speed ratio override

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1 ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 5000 ; force feedback damping coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.0045 ; force feedback latency (secs)
max_steering_torque = 2000 ; steering torque in N*in giving max device force

[Replay]
ReplayMemoryOverride = 262144 ; (256MB - approx. 305 min.)
Communications: This will set you up for racing online across the internet (ie. using IPs). Basically a must for any real form of online racing.

Hack: Its late so I may get this wrong, but its to stop the steering ratio changing at low speeds, which isn't what you really want when using a wheel.

Joy: This is the force feedback settings. This is lifted straight out of my core.ini and everyone's set up is different, so just tweak these settings until they feel good for you.

Replay: If you've got plenty of RAM, you can up this to save longer replays. My setting was for 1Gb RAM. I've now gone to 2Gb but I've left it as it is.

I hope this helps, but as I say its late so I hope I haven't missed anything important!

Good luck with it! You've come along a bit late in the day, but GPL is great if you take the time to get to know it. Very frustrating though...

GPL is by far the most rewarding sim it just takes a bit of practice no other game can compete imo, there lots happening with gpl now, plenty of mods in development.

The steering hack changes the ratio at low speeds. With it off it stays the same as what you have set in your setup i find it makes steering round slow corners dodgy and have it turned off.

It was late when I wrote my post and I knew I would get it the wrong way round!

I think I have some old setup guides somewhere... I'll go look.

Edit: indeed I have. See attached.
