Porsche 918
Hello, there are some rumors that a race version of the 918 will come to Detroit 2011.
That version will be GT1, GT2 or hybrid version????? |

Surely (and IMHO unfortunately) not GT1, as Porsche appears to be through with Ratel...

What would it be allowed to race in? Haven't seen anything from the ACO about hybrid GT2s and they ran the GT3 Hybrid at Petit Le Mans last year with a waiver from IMSA and in its own class. Wouldn't be surprised to see an updated GT3H if Porsche has gotten some idea of what would be allowed as the 56th entry to the LM24 this year. Unless Porsche has made a track only model of the 918 to go along with a street model.

It wouldn't seem like it would the right place, maybe just the first show after they finished the car since the show is in two weeks. Has there been anything else with power levels like the 918 racing in the N24? The 911s and M3s have been ruling the Ring for the last few seasons, right? This would run rings around the 911s and M3s, at least street car to street car. Not that I'm complaining, except that we have no open endurance race like this here in the US to get to see it in person.

They'll put some restrictors on it and then let it compete in some special class. The LFA from Lexus made more power than the 911s and M3's yet was restricted as well, but that ran in SP8 class.

It's a hybrid, they could run it in a E1-XP type class like the GT3-R and the GT2 BMWs last year.

If the launch is in the USA is there a hope that they could be building a GT2 for ALMS? - after all they made a big show of the hybrid at PLM

I think rolling test bed under race condition in the N24 would be best bet. Likely running unclassified. And what better way to alert North Americans to the race than to show them your new pride and joy hybrid race car? Twould be nice to see it in GT3 to compete with the SLS and Audi R8, but that would be infringing on the 911 turf again.

This is more complicated than appears. The 918 will be the model above the 911 so if the 911 has GT2 and GT3 versions i really don´t know in witch category will the 918 perform.
In my opinion the 918 race car will be a "showracecar" that will bring the stage 2 of the flywheel hybrid powertrain. This system will come later ("2015") on the Porsche LMP1. |

The renders of it remind me of the Porsche GT1, and when "GT" cars were the top class at the 24 hours of Le Mans. The only real option I see is it running the 24 hours of Nurburgring, but again don't see the point of using Detroit to unveil it.

I'd love for GT1 to be like that again, from the late 90's early 2000's. That'd be great to see hybrid powered cars making what power they produce in street trim, or above 600hp-700hp with a KERS or some type of hyrbid powertrain option. This is where GT1 should go. Maybe then they'd be relevant and we could see cars like this 918, a SLS Hyrbid, that Audi E-Tron or whatever, maybe some other hybrid powered cars.

There is also another rumor that Porsche will unveil a 600 hp mid engine road car at Detroit. This also seems very unlikely. It seems that with all of these rumors that Porsche must at least have something interesting to surprise us with at Detroit. What will it be though? As long as it's not another SUV or some giant 4 door monstrosity I don't care.

With horsepower figures escalating ever further in GT3, I could actually see this being a replacement for the GT3R come 2012... The Lambo for 2011 is up to 600+ bhp.... and Porsche really can't go there with an unblown 4l flat six. |

I remember chatting to an Audi driver at Silverstone a while back...
"Yes, we have a LOT more power than the Morgan. But we weigh 100KG more!" His car had retired, with broken transmission... Bring something silly, and SRO will reign it in. The 997 GT3 IS the benchmark. I somehow doubt Porsche will introduce something way more expensive, only to see it crippled, and suffer defeat to the 'lesser' model... |

The problem is that the BoP doesn't work like that - otherwise Porsche wouldn't have to update their suppossed benchmark every other year...

That is something that bothers me, TBH. WHY update stuff, if it's all equalised anyway? But year on year, GT3 lap times are tumbling...
Seems crazy to me. GT3 times now aren't far away from decent GT2 lap times from when they were introduced. Slow the whole thing down, let's make it that an original GT3 stands a chance against next week's model. It's NOT factory fighting factory, but Pro-Am, so let's keep it simple. |
