more silver arrows photos...
Here's a few more photos taken by my Grandfather with his home made camera. I'm wracking my brains trying to remember where they were taken. It's at a hill climb somewhere in southern Germany. Maybe someone here will know. In a few days I'll have the full size copies up at ...
http://www.pbase.com/smarjoram/root Also, my grandmother gave me a couple of books by Hans Stuck and Berndt Rosemeyer's wife - they're both full of great photos - maybe I can post a few here if they're out of print. Last edited by stefan; 29 Jul 2002 at 17:10. |

I've been thinking of doing some motor racing art for a while now - so far it's only got as far as sketches. But you're right, the bottom picture particularly has a great composition and tells the story well too. Would it improve on the photo though?

Here's the link for the full size ones...
http://www.pbase.com/smarjoram/more_1930s_racing There's a few bikes too and a strange cyclecar which someone might want to identify. If anyone can tell me more about any of them I'd be very chuffed. |

Stefan, I'm in awe.
I've never seen anything like these pics. They are absolutely wonderful. Thanks for sharing them with us. |

As I've posted elsewhere, these are taken at the start of the 1938 Grossglockner hillclimb in Austria. The Auto Union driver is Hans Stuck and the Mercedes drivers are Hermann Lang and Manfred von Brauchitsch: difficult to recognize which is which, but I think Lang is probably the one in the white linen helmet.

I would change it slightly though to make it more dramatic. I would move the car slightly to the right so the rear wheel is visible and show it smoking away from the line with a little wheelspin. |

Great photos, thanks Stefan. On your website photos, there is another one with a Mercedes about to start, and you can even see Alfred Neubauer standing there. Amazing shots, and wonderful quality.

The shape, the pose, it has to be him! I'd love to know what happened to him through the war years, as when Mercedes returned to racing in the 50s, there he was, exactly as he had been 20 years ago! Is there a biography of him, it would certainly be an interesting read.

Just realised, he's there in your second photo above, checking out the Auto Union. So spying on rival race cars is nothing new then!
