Hammerdown should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
rfactor newbie advice

Ok, so I've given in and bought myself rfactor and must admit I'm quite enjoying it. I still prefer LFS for its tactile experience, but I think the racing is better in rfactor and, lo and behold, there is quite a lot to be said for racing 'real' cars on 'real' circuits. Just been having a blast in a Caterham Academy on Castle Combe (about 1:24.4 so far). The force feedback is a bit weird and it still seems to try and turn in for you, but I can live with it and I don't want to go messing around with ini files.

My question is: Is there a definitive guide to rfactor anywhere, that tells you things like where to put the setups you've just downloaded and how to get your original rfactor cars back when you've just installed the Caterham mod?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ta.

What wheel do you have?

Setups go in the rfactor/userdata/your name/settings folder. Just place the setup in the correct track folder.

I don't have the Caterham mod, so I'm not sure how the UI is setup. But there should be an option that says player on it. Click that, and it will bring up a little menu that has racing series on it. That's where you change what series you want to use.

Hope this helps.

Have you got steering help turned on?

Thanks for the help guys.

I've got a logitech DFP. I've got all the driver aids turned off. It's set up in the logitech profiler as 103% strength, everything else unchecked and/or zeroed. In-game settings are -80% and Low. Running RealFeel plug-in.

It just seems very dead in the centre and very keen to turn, a bit like the self-centreing is reversed. Or is this racing Caterhams behave?

Cheers

try turning off realfeel (key G on the keyboard turns off all plugins). If you have the latest realfeel plugin, you can press right CTRL and i think is 8 on the numpad and it will invert real feel forces and stop the wheel ffb turning in on itself.

To get back to other cars, on main menu, click the top icon (customize) then go to Player, then at the top it will say Race Series or along them lines, click on that and then click the mod. TBH caterham's aren't that good, they sure could do with alot of work to remove the icy feeling the tires have.

Cheers for that, I'll give it a go. What would you recommend I try next car wise?

The -80% is the force feedback strength? Try making it a positive percentage (the slider goes from -100% to 100%). If you're describing what I think you are that should help.

he said wheel is a DFP, so he'll need negative FFB to reverse the effects. So running -80% is correct, its most likely realfeel inversing it the wrong way. I'd go with BMW 320 E21, great car to drive

inverted the real feel and set the logitech profiler to 110% and it works a lot better. Thanks.

Also found the missing cars and loaded the setups at last!

Cheers

I also took the in-game FF setting down to -100. I'll try -80 again to see how that goes. Positive values don't give me good results.

Sounds like a thumbs-up for the beemer then!

certain wheels prefer negative FFB values, the DFP, Momo, G25 and Thrustmaster Pro Clutch are the ones i know that need negative FFB values. Also try downloading yourself the FFB menu from rfactor central

http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=FFB%20menu

i use normal ffb, realfeel felt no different to be honest, apart from more kerb rumble. FFB lets you alter more ffb options than previous, like rumble strip values like how much they pull you in etc, more steering force (acting on wheel to make it want to centre more) and also it includes some menu options like speed, gears etc on replays and also choose more options when setting up race days, testing etc.
