Top Speeds at Le Mans 2004

I have just seen the top speeds from this years Le Mans over on DSC. This year the speed trap was at the Dunlop Chicane.

The top 5 quickest where:-

1 - Nasamax #14 314Kph
2 - Pescarolo #18 310
3 - Lola #4 308
3 - Zytek #22 308
5 - Pescarolo #17 305

The quickest car in LMP2 was the Intersport car at 295Kph. Quickest in GTS was the #65 Ferrari at 286Kph. Now for GT and there is a real suprise there the quickest car was the 89 TVR at a speed of 265Kph.

Well this continues to reinforce that top speed doesn't win sportscar races, lap times and reliability do.

The WM Peugeot would have won a drag race in 1988 at 252 MPH, but went nowhere when you had to turn.

NASAMX's top speed is impressive none the less though.

FYI, and for those who are interrested : David Legangneux gives, on Jérôme Mugnier's Virage, some top speeds taken at the end of the starting straight...

I find it hard to believe that both Pescas and the Nasamax were faster at that point than the Audis - are we sure this is right?

I would also think that these numbers are just before the braking point into the Dunlop Chicane. I find it hard to beleive that anyone would excess 300km/h between the bridge and Esses.

The speed trap is at the start of the curve, just before the braking point...

Notice that if a car is faster, it doesn't mean it will make it faster in the curve itself, due to a better balance of the car of best trim of the brakes.

That does'nt surprise me : again, speed is not enough...

The Audis have never been the fastest cars in a straight line at Le Mans. But over the course of a lap...crickey!

Top speed doesn't show anything even in short distance races, remeber a few years ago Arrows were consitently the "fastest" in formula 1. A drag car would be faster than any other type of racing car, but have you ever seen one turn a corner?

Interesting aside from the main race.

The New Man liveried Porsche 962C in the Legends race was pulling 212mph on the approach to Indianapolis!!!

That is incredible - how does it compare to the speeds of the 2004 LM cars?

i'm not sure, but the Dome that crashed at Indianapolis last year i believe was clocked at 207 mph. I would suspect that with the chicanes, the approach to indianapolis is likely the fastest spot on the track. The next closest is probably the first segment of the current Mulsanne.

It's still with Joest in his private collection, as are many of their cars.
