V8SC in Darwin beyond 2010

A new deal has been struck that will see the Northern Territory host the popular V8 Supercars beyond 2010, the Northern Territory News reports.

The NT round is currently secured until 2007.

But the newspaper says the Territory government has reached a long-term deal with race organisers AVESCO.

"The agreement takes it out past 2010," a source said on Friday.

But the Territory Government and race organisers AVESCO remained tight lipped, refusing to confirm details about the deal.

"The details will be revealed on November 30," the source said on Friday night.

"But we can say the Government will deliver good news for V8 fans."

The deal will be announced by Chief Minister Clare Martin and AVESCO chairman Tony Cochrane at a celebratory lunch in Darwin on November 30.

In May, Ms Martin said the Government was negotiating to lock in the fixture for a further five years - through to 2012.

While no financial terms have been released, it is believed a five-year deal would cost the NT Government about $1.25 million. But the race is estimated to be worth up to $12 million a year to the NT economy.

The V8 Supercars were first held at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway in 1998. More than 35,000 people flock to the event each year.

The next race in the NT will be held from July 1 to July 3 next year.

Invitations to the November 30 event - at the SkyCity Darwin casino - have already been sent out.

It tantalisingly said "some exciting V8 Supercar news" will be announced.

A round sponsor perhaps?

Hows about Steve Irwin's Darwin Safari presented by Toyota

SO who goes or who has been to the V8's in Darwin.

Seeing that we only get 1 round out West I have heard the Darwin round is great viewing and atmosphere, thinking of going in 2005...Love to hear the Pro's and con's to going to this event.

Exciting V8Supercar news to AVESCO means that they are getting paid a higher sanctioning fee doesn't it

I don't know about a visionary body, we are due an election sometime around next years event and being a small place we can give our pollies sh*t down at the local Coles or Woolies, but I reckon the likes of Brighty, Wally Storey and the myriad of other team members who enjoy our fishing are more than happy.

Sorry, GTR, but Jenny doesn't belong to you Sydneysiders, she is actually a Hunter Valley/Newcastle girl.
