To Roll or not to Roll
Hello petrol folk.
I'm thinking of fitting a roll cage to my mk2 golf gti. Do I go for a weld in or a bolt in. Do I go for a bolt in with clamp plates or weld in bolt mounts. Do clamp plates cause shell distortion to a critical point. Do I attempt the fitting myself. Got all the gear including welding rig. What's the verdict gang. Dya fancy helping out with some little gems? |

Welded is twice as good as bolt in, but four times harder to fit.
Bolt in is ten times better than nothing. An off the shelf bolt in cage will probably distort the shell a little unless you are either very lucky or very very careful. I shouldn't worry about it as your car is now twice as stiff and you can easily reset your suspension. I would only be happy with a proper welded cage in my race car, but in my track day car I may just fit a simpler bolted in affair. Hope that helps. |

for a trackday car id go bolt in, should help stiffen the chassis up nicely and with some nice cut slicks and good suspension you should kill most cars on the corners if you are brave enough. (unless they have got the same stuff lol ) but I have a group A weld in cage ready to be fitted to the racecar

get hold of a copy of the rac blue book before u start and make sure you weld some plates to the body where the cage mounts. you dont want it popping thru the floor!!
